Climate strike in Hesse: Churches finally demand real policy measures!
On February 14, 2025, various centers of the Protestant churches in Hesse mobilize to participate in a demonstration with the movement of Fridays for Future. The call is made against the background of the urgent need for a world of air conditioning and a future worth living. Among other things, the centers of education and social responsibility of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau (EKHN), the Center of the Ekumene of the EKHN, the Evangelical Church of Kurhessen-Waldeck (EKKW) and the EKKW committee are involved. Ekkw Environmental pastor Michael Böttcher has spread the message in which the critical situation of the climate crisis is emphasized.
The facilities are concerned about the lack of political attention to the climate crisis in recent months. They emphasize that a fair and peaceful world is only possible through a serious approach to the climate crisis. The demand that politics and parties consistently pursue climate protection regardless of the election campaign or current weather events is supported. In addition, it is pointed out to the alarming fact that in 2024 the 1.5-degree mark was exceeded for the first time globally, which underlines the urgency of action. The man -made climate change progresses at unprecedented speed.
demands of the protesting
The nationwide climate strike, which was launched by Fridays for Future, takes place a week before the Bundestag election on February 14th. The aim is to call for a commitment to the political parties for net climate neutrality by 2035. The Berlin demonstration, which starts at the Brandenburg Gate, is used by the initiative to criticize politicians for their ignorance of the climate crisis. It is warned that disasters such as the devastating fires in California could become normal.
A central concern of the protesters is to demand a safe promise of the future from the next federal government. Germany is faced with the challenge of initiating the gas exit and stopping new gas bores in order to become a net atmosphere until 2035. The demands also include strengthening social justice and the affordability of climate -friendly behavior. A special proposal includes the creation of a fund for the financial protection of the population regarding climate adjustment and disaster relief. Furthermore, it is required to tax super -rich and fossil companies higher in order to cover the necessary transformation costs.
climate justice in focus
The discussion about climate justice has gained importance in recent years. Historically speaking, countries of the global north bear greater responsibility for climate change. The poorest countries have significantly lower per capita emissions, while the richest 10% of the population in Europe have a significant proportion of greenhouse gas emissions together than the poorest. In the case of natural disasters, vulnerable population groups are particularly affected, which shows how much the climate crisis increases social inequalities.
Civil society climate movement therefore calls for dealing with questions of justice, in particular with regard to the distribution of emission reductions and the participation in decisions. The ability and demand approach offer additional orientation for the evaluation methods of climate protection obligations. Ultimately, the use to limit global global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees aims at a fairer distribution of the loads of climate protection measures.
In view of the upcoming Bundestag election, the public commitment on the topics of climate and justice is viewed by the protesters as measures for a safe and just future. The voices of the demonstrators become louder in order to underline the urgency of their concerns, and the hope for decisive political changes remains. For more information on the topic you can ekkw href = "https://www.evangelisch.de/inthalt/238307/17-01-2025/fridays-future-ruft-zu-klimastreik-auf"> evangelisch.de and bpb.de Visit.
