Count birds and experience nature: Hour of the garden birds in Hesse!

The weather in Kassel promises sunny and warm climate with temperatures of up to 25 degrees next weekend. The starting point could not be better to take part in the campaign "Hour of the Garden Birds" organized by the NABU and the Landesbund for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV), which takes place from May 9th to 11th, 2025. The initiative encourages citizens to observe birds in the garden, on the balcony or in the park for an hour and report the highest number of every bird species. It aims to improve the understanding of the bird world in Hesse and offers an exciting way to actively deal with domestic nature. Participants can report their observations online via the "Vogelwelt" or by post by May 19, since the telephone hotlines are no longer available. A “school lesson of garden birds” is also offered to inspire children for bird watching.

for Friday, May 9, a temperature of up to 20 degrees is expected, with a little cloudy, but without rain. On Saturday, the maximum values rise to 19 to 23 degrees, while in higher altitudes there are about 17 degrees. The night temperatures are between 4 and 9 degrees. On Sunday, the last day of the campaign, the meteorologists expect a lot of sunshine and temperatures that fluctuate between 20 and 22 degrees in the northeast, but reach up to 25 degrees in the southwest. About 17 degrees can be expected in the Rhön. During the weekend, the beginning of the ice saint is signaled, which could theoretically mean the last frost nights of spring. The German Weather Service (DWD) already warned of Frost in North and Central Hesse on Saturday night. Meteorologist Dominik Jung also fears that it could be the "driest May since the beginning of the weather records", which increases the risk of forest fires.

participate and share

In addition to the "hour of garden birds", the NABU gives practical tips for garden owners to offer birds a habitat. This includes the provision of water points that should be cleaned and changed regularly. These measures are particularly important in the context of current drought to help birds in the region. Participation in the campaign can also be associated with prices, which increases the incentive to the participation campaign.

  • Next bird counting campaigns:
  • 9. until January 11, 2026: hour of the winter birds
  • 8. until May 10, 2026: hour of garden birds

For nature-loving people, the NABU also offers an extensive registration portal for nature observations, which can be reached via the website nabu-naturgucker-bachtungen.de Not only birds, but also other animal species and plants can be reported here. The data collected support nature conservation and are incorporated into scientific studies.

In addition, observations are flowing into the state databases of Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, with the aim of integrating data in other federal states in the coming years. A significant number of over 17.6 million observations and 3.7 million photos and videos have already been registered by February 2025, which shows the great interest and active participation in nature conservation projects. This information is not only important for reports, but also help to develop protective measures for the wildlife on site.
