Future visions for the Main-Kinzig-Kreis: strong together into the new year!
On December 30, 2024, the anniversary year “50 Years MKK” took place in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis. In a New Year's address, District Administrator Thorsten proudly addresses the citizens for a happy, successful and healthy year 2025. He pointed out that global crises and conflicts also influence the Main-Kinzig district and that important projects were initiated to make the district sustainable.
The financial framework is difficult, but they are still working on a sustainable future. Thanks also to the new full -time district tip, especially at the first district deputy Andreas Hofmann and the district deputy Jannik Marquart. In addition, the high commitment of the citizens in volunteering was recognized. The effects of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine are noticeable in the district, especially in the accommodation and care of refugees.
criticism and challenges
District Administrator proudly expressed criticism of the Hessian state government for cuts in municipal financial equalization in the amount of over 200 million euros and the non-transfer of federal funds. The district budget for 2025 has a gap of over 40 million euros. In addition, the standards control lawsuit against the refugee distribution ordinance of the State of Hesse is maintained, since many volunteers are dissatisfied with the defect administration.
The Main-Kinzig-Kreis is planning investments of at least 200 million euros in education and school over the next five years. Furthermore, the expansion of the digital infrastructure is continued by the district's broadband company. Progress can also be seen in the area of renewable energies: over 11,000 photovoltaic systems, 24 biomass systems, 30 hydropower plants and 100 wind turbines are already in operation. The construction of a surface waterworks in the area of the Kinzig reservoir for drinking water extraction is planned by 2030.
Medical and nursing care in the district is on a high standard, with 13 elderly and care centers and a telenotic system in the emergency services. In addition, an academy for health and care for training in nursing, medical and health professions will be founded, and a "trainee campus" for around 150 trainees and block students is to be built by the end of 2026. The support of civic engagement and the 3,000 clubs in the district are also emphasized, with a planned volunteer fair on March 29, 2025 in the Main-Kinzig-Forum in Gelnhausen.
In another topic, the city councils in Steinau and Bad Soden-Salmünster support the district committee in a standard control application at the Administrative Court. This application concerns the distribution of refugees in Hesse and is directed against the current distribution system that the Kinzig Valley burdens excessively. Bad Soden-Salmünster calls for the Federal Government to increase the funds for refugee accommodation.
The SPD parliamentary group in Bad Soden-Salmünster supports the humane responsibility, while it does not agree to the CDU parliamentary group that demands measures against illegal migration. Mayor Christian Zimmermann from Steinau emphasizes the need for a fair distribution and sufficient funds for the care of refugees. He emphasizes that many refugees arrive traumatized and urgently need support.
