AfD conquers Hessen: Double voice for the alternative!

The Bundestag election 2025 in Hessen revealed a remarkable development: the AfD almost doubled its result compared to the 2021 election and achieved 17.8 percent of the vote. This means that the party remains just behind the SPD, which emerged as the strongest force. Despite the below -average result compared to the national average of 20.8 percent, the increase of 9 percentage points compared to the past election was a significant success for the Hessian AfD, such as fr.de reported.

Top candidate Jan Nolte won 21.4 percent of the vote in his Waldeck constituency, which corresponds to an increase of 12 percent since the last election. Despite a third place behind the CDU and SPD, the AfD has reached a leading position in 21 out of 421 Hessian communities. In 10 out of 22 constituencies, she took second place in the second votes and thus strengthened its influence, especially in rural regions, such as the emphasized.

The AfD's strongholds in Hesse are mainly in rural areas in the east of the federal state. The party was particularly strong in Birstein (31.4 %), Brachttal (28.7 %) and Merenberg (29.1 %). In the Wetteraukreis, too, the AfD was able to convince with an impressive result of 30.2 % in Hirzenhain. These results show that the AfD can mobilize voters not only in urban metropolitan areas, but especially in rural areas.

The AfD electorate in Hesse is mostly male and often comes from workers' professions. Around 39 percent of voters state that they are financially worse. Among young voters up to the age of 24 shows that 27 percent of men and 15 percent of women support the AfD. This makes it clear that the views within the age groups vary greatly and that the AfD is particularly strong in male voters and from rural areas.

political reactions and challenges

The political landscape also reacts to the strong performance of the AfD. Sören Bartol, the top candidate of the SPD, commented that former SPD voters had migrated to the AfD. The left sees the responsibility of the established democratic parties for the strengthening of the AfD, while the Greens are demanding to regain the trust of citizens in democracy.

CDU parliamentary group leader Ines Claus emphasized that the everyday problems of people must be focused on in order to counteract the challenges of the political mood. These comments come at a time when there are also conflicts between AfD representatives and other political actors in cities like Darmstadt, which indicates the split political mood and the challenges of a constructive culture of debate.

In summary, it can be seen that the Bundestag election 2025 has redefined the AF high castles and the electorate in Hesse has redefined. In view of the rapid increase in the AfD, the established parties have to develop effective strategies in order to meet the changing electorate and to strengthen the trust of citizens in democracy.
