On February 2, 2025, over 5,000 people demonstrated in Kassel against a policy perceived as "misanthropic" who manifested themselves in a controversial Bundestag vote between the CDU and the AfD. The Königsplatz in Kassel was filled up to over half on Sunday, with the police estimated the number of participants at 5,000 to 5,500. However, organizers spoke of 7,000 to 8,000 participants. The motto of the demonstration was: "If the CDU/CSU has the fire wall collapsed to the AfD, we will build it up again", a clear signal against the perceived networking of the two political forces.

The organizers of the protest were groups such as Kassel against the right, Siebrücke Kassel, Fridays for Future, Students for Future Kassel, the DGB district association Kassel and grandmas against right. These organizations gathered to set a strong sign against misanthropic attitudes and political decisions.

The demonstration in Kassel is not the only action of this kind: In the days before, peaceful protests had taken place in various cities in Hesse. These were directed against the plans of the Union to tighten migration policy. A particularly impressive protest took place on Saturday in Neu-Isenburg, where around 9,000 people took to the street against the AfD. The trigger was a campaign appearance by AfD Chancellor candidate Alice Weidel.

The Sunday was not only a reaction to the latest political developments for the protesters in Kassel, but also a confirmation of their constant rejection of any form of resentment and agitation. The upcoming chain of lights against hate and agitation, which in Gelnhausen from the merger "Hand on the heart" and "We are more!" was organized, the determination of continuing to put the topic on the agenda.

The demonstrations in Hesse reflect a growing discomfort within society that would like to draw attention to the dangers of a possible cooperation between the center-right parties and the extreme rights. While many formed together in Kassel against the politics of the CDU and AfD, awareness of the social fire wall between these parties was alive and committed.
