Feldhamster and beaver: Pure children in species protection on the Main-Kinzig!

On March 13, 2025, there are important topics on the agenda in species protection, especially with regard to the Feldhamster. On Wednesday, March 19, the Main-Kinzig working group will organize a public meeting in the nature conservation center in Niederrodenbach. The evening guest is Manfred Sattler, area supervisor in the so -called Feldhamsterland around Maintal. He will give a lecture entitled "Feldhamster and Beaver: by problem children and high -flyers in species protection".

The lecture is devoted to the different population development of the two species. Fortunately, while the beaver has recovered in recent years, the field hamster looks dark. In Hesse, the species suffers from a dramatic decline, which has become visible in the past 20 years: of once 57 field hamster areas, only ten have remained today. One of the last retreats extends from Bergen-Kheim to Niederdorfelden to Kilianstädten.

rescue measures to protect the field hamster

The need to protect the field hamster is increasingly recognized. For example, countries and organizations coordinate a nationwide project called "Feldhamsterland", which was initiated by the German Wildlife Foundation. The aim of this project is the scientific assessment of the remaining hamster stocks in Germany. A close cooperation with farmers should take targeted protective measures, especially in the federal states of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Bavaria.

The initiative offers opportunities to save the last populations in Feldhamster protection. This is not only done at the national level, but also through international networking as part of the "International Hamster Workgroup". A planned meeting of international campaign protectionists in Germany should show further ways to support the threatened species.

The commitment of the Hgon and the German Wildlife Foundation shows how important the exchange of knowledge and strategies in species protection is. Entry to Sattler's lecture in the nature conservation center is free, and visitors interested in nature are cordially invited to learn more about the challenges and opportunities in the protection of these two animal species.
