Unemployment is increasing in February: region is fighting against crisis events!

In February 2025, unemployment in the Marburg-Biedenkopf region rose. The head of the Marburger employment agency, Volker Breustedt, compares the current labor market situation with a subscribed flu. The unemployment rate has increased from 4.7% to 5%, which means an increase from 329 to a total of 6,822 unemployed people compared to the previous year. 4,154 people are currently unemployed in the district job center, which is more than 58 more than in the previous year.

A positive development is recorded: 382 people were able to end their unemployment and have found a new job. This means that 55 people are more than in the same month. Nevertheless, the increase in unemployment shows a worrying picture in all regions of the area. The Biedenkopf district with an increase in unemployment inventory by 4% and Stadtallendorf with an increase of 9% are particularly affected. Breustedt emphasizes that the economy is still able to hire new employees as long as the specialists are locally flexible and qualified.

The current work environment

The crisis in the suppliers of the automotive industry also has a noticeable impact on employment in the region. The number of reported positions in manufacturing professions has dropped by 34.7% compared to the previous year. There are currently 584 job seekers, but only 188 reported positions. It also shows that many older workers from 55 are released.

Another factor that contributed to the increase in unemployment is the wave of illness at the beginning of the year, which the employment agency also met. Currently, 139 unemployed are dismissed, which corresponds to an increase of 20.09%. In connection with the unemployment figures in Hesse, the number rose to 207,407, which corresponds to 255 more than in January and over 11,600 more than in the previous year. The unemployment rate in Hessen remains stable at 5.9%.

comparison with previous periods

The current situation is challenging compared to previous years. In December 2024, the number of unemployment in the district was still 6,374. This corresponded to an increase of 121 people compared to November. With a determined unemployment rate of 4.7 percent in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district, it rose by 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous month.

In December 2024, 2,384 people received unemployment benefit, which corresponds to an increase of 21.2 percent since the previous year. In addition, 563 people registered directly from the employment, an increase of 11.9 percent. Companies reported 343 new social security bodies last month, but 64 fewer than in November.

Workers are particularly in demand in the areas of economic services, health and social work as well as in the processing of businesses. Despite the challenges, the labor market players remain optimistic and emphasize the importance of flexible and qualified workers for future developments.
