Gigantic sculpture of the crab fisherman: Festival in Biedenkopf enthusiastic!

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, an impressive sculpture by a Belgian “crab fisherman on horseback” was unveiled in Biedenkopf. With a height of 5.20 meters and a weight of 1,000 kilograms, the statue is an impressive symbol for the tradition of horse fishing from Oostduinkerke, Belgium. This work of art was brought to Biedenkopf at short notice after it had previously been used in an anniversary in Bad Schallerbach, Austria.

The sculpture on the marketplace is set up as part of the five-city festival, which will be celebrated this weekend from May 9th to 11th. The festival is visited by about 120 guests from the partner cities from Oostduinkerke, Wépion-sur-Meuse, La Charité-sur-Loire and Neustadt/Orla. Mayor Jochen Achenbach and Rainer Höhn, Managing Director of the Biedenkopf Verbliesteitauf, welcome the idea to present the sculpture during this cultural highlight.

tradition and UNESCO World Heritage

The crab fishing tradition from Oostduinkerke was recognized in December 2013 by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. This form of fishing has about 500 years of history. The fishermen ride on robust peasant horses and catch crabs in the sea. Each horse carries two baskets on the saddle to store the catch.

Traditionally, the crab fishermen meet on the beach to attach their nets and dress in the typical clothing, which consists of yellow oil jackets, high boots and a southwear. The ideal time for fishing is about two hours before low tide. After about three hours, the fishermen return to empty their nets. All of the sea creatures that are not required are thrown back into the sea.

diverse program and activities

The five-city meeting offers a varied program. On Saturday, May 10th, the main day of the festival will be celebrated, on which music, a game without borders for the youth and a folklore market will all contribute to the determination. The guests from Oostduinkerke will also offer crabs and provide information about traditional horse fishing.

At the same time, the German U20 volleyball team championships take place in Biedenkopf, which makes the city a meeting point for sport and culture this weekend. The various events promise an exciting and diverse experience for all visitors.
