Marburg becomes the first food sharing city of Hesse-an important step against food waste!
On February 2, 2025, Marburg was officially declared the food sharing city. This remarkable development follows a new partnership with the nationwide Foodsharing Association. With this step, Marburg is the first Hessian and the 24th city in German -speaking countries, which is committed to the principles of food sharing. Around 600 active people are already involved in the Marburg food sharing initiative, which aims to avoid overproduction of food and to promote the appreciation for food.
The initiative focuses on preserving food from waste. In the past 30 days, impressive 12 tons of food have been saved in Marburg. Since the initiative, which is now more than ten years old, thousands of tons of food have been saved from the bin. Food from five "fair divisors" are available for everyone you need.
political support and initiatives
The cooperation is also supported by politics. Maik Schöniger, city councilor of the climate list, demands that concrete political projects should be derived from the partnership. Uwe Volz from the Greens emphasizes the importance of voluntary work as an important part of the existing support. Andrea Suntheim-Pichler from the CDU/FDP/BFM points out that Marburg already has a nutritional advisory board that pursues similar goals. All politicians involved agree on the importance of food and their manufacturing process.
In the long term, the nutritional turn in Marburg could be promoted by this achievement. The appreciation for food and the fight against food waste are central concerns that are to continue to promote the community. With its structure, the Berlin initiative Foodsharing not only offers support in saving food, but also sees the opportunity to use local ambassadors.
role of the ambassadors in the food sharing initiative
The ambassadors (abbreviated bot) play a central role in representing and leading food sharing in a certain region. Her tasks include the introduction of new foodsaver and the organization more regularly. Bot-active must meet certain requirements, including at least six months of registration as a foodsaver and the completion of pick-up in order to actually be able to support sufficiently in their function.
It has been aimed for that several ambassadors and many foodsaver/company managers are active in a district to promote exchange and cooperation. The democratic process for the election of ambassadors takes place through the food saver of the respective district. Successes in the region that have already been made can thus be continued and expanded.
rules of conduct and responsibility
In order to ensure positive and respectful cooperation, food sharing has determined specific rules of conduct, which are continuously developed by the AG conduct rules and reporting system. These rules not only promote the friendly use of foodsavers, but also the correct implementation of pick -up and respectful handling of the companies from which food is saved.
The challenges of food waste are still actively addressed in Marburg. The initiative impressively shows how a strong voluntary commitment and political support can contribute to the reduction of garbage and to promote a more sustainable lifestyle. In this regard, Marburg not only has a pioneering role, but also sets new standards for other cities.
