Cute the feathered friends: Nabu calls for the bird count!
From May 9th to 11th, 2025, the annual “hour of garden birds” takes place in Hesse. Organized by the Nature Conservation Association (NABU) in cooperation with the Landesbund for Nature and Bird Protection (LBV), the campaign invites all nature lovers to observe birds in the garden, on the balcony or in the park for an hour. The aim is to write down the highest number of birds of all kinds visible at the same time and to transmit these messages. According to op-marburg.de, the state chair of nabu hesse, convinced that such reports help to develop a better understanding of the bird world in Hesse.
A special strange of this event is the possibility of discovering the house red -tailed, the bird of 2025. It is important to point out that the house red -tailed and the garden red -tailed are similar, but differentiate between color and appearance. To identify, participants can also use the vocals of the birds, which is why Nabu Hessen recommends using apps to determine birds.
Especially now: focus on swallows
Nabu Hessen is currently particularly asking about reports on flour and smoke swallows. The last autumn losses of these species have given reasons for concern. The complete results of the bird count can be submitted by May 19, 2025. On nabu-biw.de there are instructions and counting aids to support the observer.
Participants can not only contribute to the collection of important data, but also gain attractive prices. The introduction of a new free app is particularly gratifying, available for iOS and Android. This app helps with bird determination and even works on older cell phones. It is recommended to share the first experiences in nature directly via the NABU website.
background information on bird population
In order to understand why such engagements are important, it is worth taking a look at the inventory developments of bird species in Germany. As the BUND for nature conservation , around a third of the breeding bird species suffered existing losses between 2004 and 2016. In the agricultural landscape in particular, stocks such as those of Rebhuhn and Kiebitz have dropped by almost 90 %. This makes the contribution of citizens particularly valuable and sensible for the bird excursion.
The "hour of garden birds" not only offers an opportunity for observation, but also the opportunity to actively contribute to the protection and understanding of the bird species in Hesse.
