Control of the speed limits: Security and environmental protection in focus!

The traffic directorate is planning extensive controls in the next week to comply with the speed limits in the Offenbach district and in the Main-Kinzig district. In a message dated April 26, 2025, the authority informs about upcoming measurements that aim at speed hazards and noise protection. The controls are scheduled for the B 43 A and BAB 66 on different days to improve traffic safety and noise protection.

The planned measurements take place on the following days:

  • 28.04.2025: B 43 a, Hanau towards Fulda, junction Hanau-Haub; L 3262, Zeppelinheim in the direction of Buchschlag.
  • 29.04.2025: B 43 A, Hanau towards Fulda, junction Hanau-Haub.
  • 04/30/2025: BAB 66, Hanau towards Fulda, after the Bad Soden-Salmünster junction; B 448, Obertshausen towards Offenbach.
  • 01.-03.05.2025: BAB 66, Hanau towards Fulda, after the Bad Soden-Salmünster junction.
  • 04.05.2025: BAB 66, Frankfurt towards Hanau, Bischofsheim junction.

The role of speed limits in transport policy

The introduction of general speeds on motorways is a much discussed topic in Germany, especially with regard to environmental and traffic safety. As the Environmental Federal Agency , speed limits could not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also increase traffic safety. Studies have shown that the introduction of a speed limit of 120 km/h on highways could reduce CO2 emissions by up to 2.9 %.

In addition, calculations show that a speed limit of 100 km/h in the long term could even reduce 8.1 % of greenhouse gases. This is particularly relevant because CO2 emissions on German highways were 38.7 million tons in 2023. However, the discussion about speed limits is complex and is influenced by numerous factors.

factors and future developments

The State Secretary Hartmut Höppner emphasizes the controversy of this discussion. For example, the Federal Ministry of Transport, such as bmdv , reports an investigation into the possible effects of a speed. Initial results indicate that savings could be achieved, but they are less than expected. The average speed on motorway sections has decreased in recent years, which could be due to the increase in electric vehicles and increasing fuel prices.

It is also important that the control and punishment of speed violations are crucial for the effectiveness of a speed limit. Various studies show that a technical limitation of speed at 130 km/h could theoretically save CO2 emissions by up to 4.2 million tons annually. These figures make it clear that the upcoming controls not only contribute to compliance with the traffic rules, but also call for more environmentally conscious behavior on our streets.
