Circus Rolina inspires Obertshausen: Animal show with spectacular tricks!
The Circus Rolina, known for its tradition in performing art, has recently opened its gates in Obertshausen, in the Offenbach district. He will be a guest for the first time, with an impressive performance that attracts an audience of up to 600 spectators. Numerous animals, including zebras, horses, snakes, iguanas, turtles and Elana antelopes, are part of the varied program. The performances take place on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 p.m. and the last performance is planned for May 11, 2025. Initially, the first performance was well attended and the tent is on a meadow on Birkenwaldstraße in the Samerwiesen industrial area.
The initial enthusiasm for the Circus Rolina is accompanied by a controversy. Without permission, the circus has taken over an urban property of over 382 square meters, which includes an insect meadow, among other things. Mayor Manuel Friedrich critically commented on the use of urban areas and the associated damage to the nature reserve. In addition, wildly postered advertising of the circus in the city was removed from the city administration. The deputy director Andy Ortmann expressed his displeasure with the mayor and mentioned that the circus could not find a suitable public event area, which is why he had to dodge on private areas.
criticism and animal protection in the circus
In discussions about the circus, animal welfare also plays a central role. Andy Ortmann emphasizes that animal husbandry is subject to strict controls and the animals are treated well. This topic is particularly relevant because animal welfare in the circus is challenging due to frequent changes of location and transport. The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) has taken various assistance and initiatives to improve animal welfare in circus companies. These measures include the publication of the circus guidelines and the enactment of the Circus Register Ordinance, which enable better control of animal welfare in wildlife in circuses.
The circus guidelines and the revised expert opinion for the attitude of mammals serve as important orientation for animal owners and surveillance authorities. Before the introduction of the Circus Register Ordinance, authorities often had trouble monitoring the animal welfare regulations, since information about permits and requirements often do not template. The new regulation aims to consolidate relevant data and make it available quickly to ensure compliance with animal welfare standards.
traditional performances and attractions
The Circus Rolina presents a variety of classic circus performances. The Ortmann family shows a traditional circus program that includes the three pillars of animals, artistics and clowning. The highlights include noble Friesen and Welsche Arabs as well as exotic animals such as zebras and camels. The exotic train is particularly impressive, in which up to 21 animals, including water buffalo, Scottish highland cattle, donkeys and lamas, can be seen.
In addition, the clowning, presented by Alwin and his partner, ensures humorous moments. Artifications on the Ringtrapez and Hula Hoop numbers with up to 25 tires round off the varied program. Daily visits to the large animal show are possible from 10 a.m., where over 60 animals can be viewed up close.
The controversy around the permits and animal welfare throw a shadow on the ideas of the circus. While the preparations for the further performances in Obertshausen are running, it remains to be seen how the city administration will react to the current challenges.
