Time travel through the Limes: Discover the Romans via augmented reality!

In the Rheingau-Taunus district, a remarkable pilot project of the augmented reality is now being offered, which is interested in a virtual journey through time into Roman times. The initiative was presented at the end of December and offers the participants the opportunity to enjoy digital experiences along the circular way "Limespur Castellum Zugmantel". This leads through one of the most important historical sites of the Roman Limes, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2005 ( hessenschau.de , rheingau-taunus.de ).

The tour starts in Taunusstein-Orlen at the Limeskastell Zugmantel and extends over a length of five kilometers. The entire hike lasts about two hours and is suitable for children from the age of six. Five stations along the way are guided by the Roman children Caius and Celia, which offer visitors interactive information. In order to discover the virtual buildings, the participants use the newly developed "ABNTR-app". Among other things, the castle, a Roman bath, an amphitheater and the Limes border station are virtually visible ( hessenschau.de ).

the historical limes

The Obergermanisch-Rätische Limes, which runs over a total length of about 35 km in the Rheingau-Taunus district, originally served as a border fortification of the Roman Empire between the 1st and 3rd century AD The main goal of the Limes was the protection of the Roman civilization from the areas of the Germanic tribes. In his final expansion phase, it consisted of palisades, ditch and earth wall, supplemented by watchtops and castles, to make it difficult to penetrate enemy riding hordes ( rheingau-taunus.de ).

The castle tensile coat is particularly striking, where a Roman cohort was once stationed. The remains of this important historical site have only been preserved. Nevertheless, important finds from excavations around 1900 can be found in the Wiesbaden State Museum and in the Saalburg Museum. The latter was rebuilt by Kaiser Wilhelm II around 1900 and is considered the world's only reconstructed castle that offers friends of Roman history vivid insights into the life and culture of the Romans href = "https://www.rheingau-taunus.de/informieren-beangren/tourismus-kultur-sport/welterbestaetten/welterbe-limes/"> rheingau-taunus.de ).

The role of technology in historical mediation

The project in the Rheingau-Taunus district uses modern technology to bring history alive and enrich the learning process. The use of augmented reality and apps such as the "Roman traces" app in other regions shows how digital media can effectively contribute to the transfer of knowledge about cultural heritage. In Bavaria in particular, work is carried out on such projects to preserve and spread the historical context of the Limes and other ground monuments ( Bne.unesco.de ). In summary, it can be said that the innovative combination of augmented reality, historical sites and stories of Roman children in the Rheingau-Taunus district not only offers an exciting journey through the past, but also makes a valuable contribution to the attractiveness of the Limes as a tourist destination and promotes responsible learning through one's own culture.
