Eschwege receives 1.4 million euros for the new Nikolaiplatz!

The redesign of Nikolaiplatz in Eschwege takes on concrete forms. On November 13, 2024, the groundbreaking ceremony for this important project was carried out, which is not only seen as a decisive step to upgrade the central square, but should also contribute to the revival of the entire city center. The highest financial support of this kind in Hesse was secured with a funding of 1.4 million euros, which the Nassauische Heimstätte-Wohnstadt (NHW) received from the "Growth and Sustainable Renewal" program. These funds flow into the comprehensive redesign of the square, which should be completed by the second quarter of 2026, such as HNA reported.

The project is in the context of a broader initiative for sustainable urban development in Hesse, which deals with challenges such as demographic change and climate change. According to sutigigen-stadtentwicklung-hessen.de aims to maintain and improve habitats, which is also reflected in the measures on Nikolaplatz.

planned measures to improve the quality of life

The redesigned areas of Nikolaiplatz and the adjacent Nikolaigasse include a total area of around 3,500 m². Planned measures include the settlement of new trees, which are irrigated by underground rainwater management in order to lighten up the urban area and improve the city climate. The quality of stay on Nikolaiplatz is noticeably increased by creating a new central space with around 1,000 m² of water -bound area and residence areas (HNA).

A newly designed water feature and the renewal of the mixed water canal are part of the structural changes. A fountain that also provides drinking water is built, and the design of the Nikolaiturm receives a contemporary upgrade from modern lighting. The leisure activities are supplemented by planting around 20 large and small trees.

Overview of the progress and challenges

The construction work is carried out by Rohde Tief-, Straßen- und Gleisbau GmbH from Erfurt, supported by the Terranova planning offices from Munich and Rother and Partner from Eschwege. During the construction period, pedestrians are led to the shops via the surrounding Nikolaigasse and Forstgasse, since the parking lot on Nikolaplatz is not available during the redesign. Alternative parking facilities are listed in the nearby streets and squares and can be used by the residents and visitors.

The entire renovation work is in the context of a constant urban development that pursues the principle of compensating for social disadvantages and supporting the natural living conditions in lively urban spaces, as can be seen from the objectives of the state of Hesse ( Sustainable-stadtentwicklung-hessen.de ). With these extensive measures, Eschwege wants to become a sustainable city. The long -term goal of increasing the attractiveness of Nikolaiplatz as a meeting point and space of the encounter is the heart of the initiative.
