Wolf sight in Eschwege: excitement in the early morning!
On Tuesday, February 25th, a wolf was spotted in Eschwege, Hessen. This sighting occurred shortly before 7 a.m. when an employee of Werraland, Sabine L., was on the way to work and the wolf crossed Heubergstrasse. The wolf came from an approximately six meter long bush and was described by Sabine L. as significantly larger than a German Shepherd with a typical gray -brown fur. Such observations are not new in the region. Again and again, wolves have been spotted in towns in the Werra-Meißner district in recent years, including Bad Sooden-Allendorf, Hornel, Ellingerode and Bebra, according to the report by Merkur .
The sighting was quickly passed on, first to a colleague who then contacted the Hubertus hunting club. Sabine L. also informed the private information network Wolf in order to notify the responsible wolf center near Hessen Forst. The Werraland workshop management was also immediately informed about the occurrence. In the Werraland facility, which employs around 400 people with disabilities and around 100 employees in support and administration, the site is secured by a chain link fence, but has two large open access.

wolf territories in Germany
The wolf is widespread not only in Hesse, but also in other federal states. In the monitoring year 2024/25, a total of 52 wolf territories are known in Germany, as reported by the dbb-wolf . Of these territories, 44 were classified as packs, four as couples and four as territorial individual animals. A reproduction could even be detected in 43 packs, with a total of 119 confirmed puppies. Wolves are detected in several federal states such as Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxons.
The annual elevations of the wolf deposits are carried out independently by the individual federal states and the results are compiled in a national monitoring meeting. This systematic methodology ensures that the numbers and distribution of wolves in Germany can be precisely monitored. How the population will develop in the coming years remains to be seen, but the sightings like those in Eschwege show that the wolf is still a present animal in the German landscapes.
