State -of -the -art maintenance facility in Butzbach: HLB invests 110 million euros!

The construction of the new workshop for rail vehicles from the Hessische Landesbahn (HLB) in Butzbach takes on concrete forms. The construction site is progressing quickly on the former Faun site in the Nord industrial area, and on an impressive area of 73,000 square meters. State Secretary Uwe Becker recently visited the construction site and praised the close cooperation of Hessian companies, which is essential for the progress of the project. With an investment volume of 110 million euros, the modern maintenance facility should be ready for operation in January 2026.

The decision for the Butzbach location was made due to the excellent connection to the Hessian rail network. Managing Director Veit Salzmann emphasized the need for this new facility to ensure independence from the maintenance offers of Deutsche Bahn. It is also the aim of the HLB to act as a service provider for other railway companies.

progress of the construction work

The construction progress has been continuous since the work began in July 2024. The scaffolding of the hall is currently standing, and by the end of February the supports and binder should be built for the workshop. In parallel to the construction work, the track systems and the overhead lines are installed. Vehicles will in future get directly from the Butzbach train station to the maintenance facility, which should significantly increase the efficiency of the maintenance measures.

So far, over 180,000 tons of earth have been moved and the load -bearing capacity of the hall floor has been improved. The shell should be completed within the next six months, while the expansion work begins in April 2025. These include the facade cladding, roofing and the interior of the four hall ships. In order to optimize the operating processes, the renewal of the railway overpass via the Bleichweg and the installation of crucial guiding and security technology are also provided.

training and employment

From commissioning in 2026, a total of 85 employees will work in the eight -track, 200 meter long hall, half of which will be hired. The HLB is currently employing 30 trainees in professions such as electronics technicians and mechatronics engineers. This shows the company's commitment to train young specialists and thus secure the need for qualified personnel in the long term.

In addition to maintaining your own vehicles, HLB-Maintenance GmbH will offer services for other railway traffic companies. The maintenance system is to be operated in an environmentally friendly manner by using modern technologies such as a geothermal system and photovoltaic systems on the hall roof, which can largely be met.

Overall, the new maintenance device for rail vehicles in Butzbach not only represents an important step in the development of the HLB, but also contributes to strengthening the railway infrastructure in Hesse. According to the General Railway Act, railways are obliged to ensure safe operation and to take the necessary measures to maintain. This project also fulfills a major role in the context of the extensive railway infrastructure in Germany.
