Excitement in Herborn and Echzell: Stich elections decide on mayors!

on Sunday, May 4, 2025, mayoral elections took place in the Central Hessian municipalities of Herborn and Echzell. These elections were under special observation because they will decide on the future political orientation of the two cities. A total of seven candidates competed in Herborn, which led to a long and multi -layered ballot. The incumbent, non -partisan mayor Katja Gronau wanted to defend her position. Nevertheless, she could not find enough approval from the voter.

Lukas Winkler from the CDU received the most votes with 30.7 percent. Gronau followed in second place with 21.1 percent. Since both candidates missed the necessary absolute majority, on May 25th it will be in a runoff election. The rest of the applicants in Herborn, including Jörg Menger from the SPD and Patrick Pfeiffer from the Free Voting Association, could not achieve any significant voices. Overall, the turnout in Herborn was 48.3 percent, which requires activities to mobilize voters for the upcoming runoff election.

The situation in Echzell was significantly different. Fewer candidates competed here, which might lead to a clearer decision. Raik Noll from the CDU reached 37.6 percent of the votes and thus qualified for the runoff election. Tatjana Lange from the SPD followed only 36.1 percent. Here, too, the voices were not enough for a final decision in the first ballot. The other candidates, Christa Degkwitz of the Greens and Thomas Hoppe (independent), remained behind the two top candidates. The turnout in Echzell was 62.2 percent.

The withdrawal of the incumbent

It is worth noting that the non -party mayor Wilfried Mogk did not start again. This withdrawal took place after a citizens' decision for a new “future park” was not found last September. Mogk's decision could have significantly influenced the dynamics of the election in Echzell and may have contributed to the narrow results between Noll and long.

Overall, the election results in both municipalities reflect the political challenge in front of which the candidates are facing. With the upcoming stitch elections it will be shown whether the voters decide to continue existing the current incumbent or a change at the top.

While the political landscape in Hesse is still changing, it remains to be seen how the developments in Herborn and Echzell will have a specific effect on the coming weeks and months. The stitch elections promise to provide exciting decisions and set the course for the future of these municipalities.
