Revolution on the plate: Meat substitute from beer feters conquers the cafeteria!

In the canteen of the Technical University of Middle Hesse (THM) in Friedberg, there is now an exciting innovation: From now on, meat substitute is offered there, which is obtained from the beer production. This new product bears the name Brew Bites and was developed by the young start-up upcirll. The introduction of this alternative food sets new standards in the cafeteria and not only addresses the students, but also environmentally conscious eaters.

On the first day of the introduction, delicious dishes with Brew Bites such as "Biryani with Brew Bits Hack" and "Red lentils with tomatoes, Garam Masala and Brew Bites" were served. These culinary creations were developed together with the renowned, big chef Steve Karlsch, who acted as a culinary consultant. The use of Brew Bites as a meat alternative could pave the way for innovative dishes in the cafeteria.

sustainability in focus

A decisive advantage of Brew Bites is sustainability. Product production takes place from beer feters, a by -product of beer production. Compared to conventional soy protein, this new meat alternative has a significantly lower CO2 emissions: 100 kg brew bits save an impressive 800 kg CO2. In addition, the production of 100 kg brew bites requires a total of 7,000 liters less water than that of pea protein - this corresponds to about 47 bathtubs. These ecological advantages could be very well received, especially for flexitarians who regularly do without meat.

Brew Bites are characterized by a balanced recipe from five natural ingredients: beer feters, pumpkin seed flour, pea protein, water and salt. With a protein content of 29 g per 100 g, you even outperform the protein content of some types of meat.

versatile application options

The versatility of Brew Bites makes it an ideal ingredient in modern kitchen. So they can not only be used in traditional dishes such as kebab and pan dishes, but also find their place as topping for salads or in beer goulash. According to fnp , the sale of Brew Bites is currently geared towards major customers, and availability in retail is not intended. The Studierendenwerk Gießen and Friedberg is proud to be the world's first buyer of Brew Bites.

In view of the growing market for vegetable meat alternatives, the introduction of Brew Bites is a step in the right direction. The German Food Book Commission has already published guiding principles for vegan and vegetarian products in 2018, and the market is increasingly being asked by consumers who value healthy, climate-friendly nutrition. Figures show that 44% of the respondents provide information in a survey of refraining from meat once or several times a week, with the proportion of 14 to 29 year olds in remarkable 64%.

In summary, it can be said that Brew Bites not only enrich the THM cafeteria, but can also make a significant contribution to environmental protection. This innovative meat substitute could turn out to be a real gamuchanger in the world of vegetable nutrition.
