Wetteraukreis is planning 45 new mobility stations for environmentally friendly traffic solutions!

An important step towards environmentally friendly mobility is currently being prepared in the Wetteraukreis and the regional association Frankfurtrheinmain. The two institutions have jointly developed plans to expand a sustainable transport infrastructure that provides for the construction of 45 new mobility stations in 19 district municipalities. This initiative aims to promote the switch to environmentally friendly transport in rural areas, which is particularly important against the background of the current challenges in the transport sector.

The project for which funding was requested from the state of Hesse not only represents an answer to the mobility needs of the population, but also a contribution to reducing environmental pollution. Hessen offers financial support to improve traffic conditions and sustainable mobility development.

mobility stations in detail

These new mobility stations are equipped with a variety of offers to increase the attractiveness of environmentally friendly modes of transport. These include sharing offers, electric charging stations, modern bicycle parking systems and measures to increase quality of stay.

The close cooperation between the Wetteraukreis, the regional association and the municipalities involved is strengthened by regular consultation appointments and committees. By June 1, 2025, the application for this construction project must be submitted, which presents the municipalities with challenges. Preparatory work such as the creation of situation and detail plans as well as the tender for framework contract partners are already being planned.

An important goal of the project is to create a uniform appearance of the mobility stations in order to increase their recognition value. In this context, the successful establishment of mobility stations in the district and its possible expansion to the region is also examined, supported by the “Space for New Mobility” (RAMO).

national and international aspects

The initiative in the Wetteraukreis lies in accordance with the current requirements for mobility in Germany, where the transport system causes considerable environmental loads. More than a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany comes from the traffic sector. Freight transport has more than tripled since 1960, and passenger traffic even quadrupled, which has led to a drastic increase in energy consumption in traffic. The federal government plans to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the traffic area by 2030.

In an international context, the European Commission is aiming for decarbonizing the European mobility system by 2050. Ambitious measures are required to achieve these goals. Here, an integrated approach is pursued, which includes technological solutions as well as economic incentives to promote it.

The implementation of sustainable mobility therefore requires a mix of measures. The focus must be on avoiding traffic, relocating more environmentally friendly modes of transport and the increase in energy efficiency. Ultimately, everything aims to create more mobility with less traffic, with innovative traffic strategies and systems necessary to cope with this challenge.
