Members of the Hessian parties: Who is on the upswing?

In 2024, the Hessian national associations of the various political parties experienced dynamic development. A survey by the German Press Agency (dpa) in Wiesbaden shows that the number of members of the parties increased or fell differently. Among the Hessian parties, the SPD remains the party with 40,736 members, although it still counted 41,889 members at the beginning of the year and thus recorded a decline. The CDU Hessen reported a number of 32,953 on November 30, 2024, which corresponds to a slight increase of 120 members compared to the beginning of the year.

The Greens, on the other hand, have had a remarkable increase of over 1,000 members since the end of the traffic light government in Berlin. Its number of members rose from 9,686 at the beginning of the year to 11,576 in mid -December 2024. On the other hand, the FDP Hessen must accept a decline of 7,099 members (as of December 31, 2023) to 6,715 (as of December 31, 2024), despite 275 new admission applications that have been received since the end of the traffic light government.

growth of the AfD and the left

A positive development shows itself at the AfD Hessen, which with 3,542 members now represents the fifth largest state association of the Federal Party. This means an increase of more than 700 members between December 31, 2023 and December 31, 2024. In addition, the left Hesse recorded a membership growth to 3,652 in the same period. This number represents the highest number of members in the history of the party, with over 900 new entries in the course of the year.

The increase in the left was largely eliminated after Donald Trump's election victory and that from the traffic light government. Nevertheless, the party faces challenges: a new competitor party, the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), has formed from former left-wing members and moves into several state parliament straight away. The situation is complicated for the Hessian left because it has not been represented in the state parliament since 2023.

forecasts and challenges

Although the left in Hesse has a strong membership development, the forecasts for the upcoming Bundestag election in February are rather negative. The party is currently only three percent nationwide. The political landscape in Hesse remains perishable by the dissatisfaction of many voters, especially with regard to important state -political problems such as immigration, education, mobility as well as climate and environment.

In summary, the developments of the past few months show the adaptability and the challenges with which the Hessian parties are confronted. The number of members not only reflect internal dynamics, but also the reactions to federal political events and the opinions of voters.
