In October 2023, the indoor pool in the Wiesbaden district of Mainz-Kostheim was completely destroyed by a devastating fire. This incident not only caused a loss of leisure options, but also showed serious damage to the building fabric and the technical infrastructure, including sauna, ventilation system and roof construction. To ensure the preservation of the swimming offer for the local community, the magistrate of the city of Wiesbaden decided to build the indoor pool. A feasibility study has identified the new building as the more economically sensible solution compared to a general renovation. The estimated costs for the new building amount to 31.54 million euros, while the renovation is calculated to around 30.16 million euros. Mende said that the new building enables faster planning and execution, which ultimately leads to a more energy -efficient and economic operation of the new swimming pool.

The financial burden for Wiesbaden will be noticeable in the household 2026/2027 at the earliest. The fire insurance is expected to cover 4.1 million euros in costs.
