New construction of the Hallenbad Kostheim: A sign of the future of the region!
In October 2023, the indoor pool in the Wiesbaden district of Mainz-Kostheim was completely destroyed by a devastating fire. This incident not only caused a loss of leisure options, but also showed serious damage to the building fabric and the technical infrastructure, including sauna, ventilation system and roof construction. To ensure the preservation of the swimming offer for the local community, the magistrate of the city of Wiesbaden decided to build the indoor pool. Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende (SPD) emphasized the central importance of the swimming offer for children, clubs and families in the region. The new building should represent an important investment in the quality of life and address future generations.
A feasibility study has identified the new building as the more economically sensible solution compared to a general renovation. The estimated costs for the new building amount to 31.54 million euros, while the renovation is calculated to around 30.16 million euros. Mende said that the new building enables faster planning and execution, which ultimately leads to a more energy -efficient and economic operation of the new swimming pool.
promotion of the community and sustainability
The new plan for the indoor pool also provides for modern technology, but also the guarantee of accessibility and sustainable construction practices. The new building should not only serve as a sports facility, but also act as a meeting point for the community, families, clubs and sports enthusiasts. At a time when social infrastructures are particularly important, the local advisory board of Kostheim and the city council see the new building as a forward -looking investment in the future of the region.
The next steps include detailed plans and the review of the construction costs to identify savings potential without impairing the quality of the indoor pool. The financial burden for Wiesbaden will be noticeable in the household 2026/2027 at the earliest. The fire insurance is expected to cover 4.1 million euros in costs.
nationwide initiatives for infrastructure improvement
With these initiatives it becomes clear that the construction of the indoor pool is not only important locally, but can also be seen as part of a greater movement to strengthen the municipal infrastructure in Germany. The decision for the indoor pool in Mainz-Kostheim could also serve as a model for other cities and municipalities that face similar challenges.
