Shake election around the Mayor's Office: Mende vs. von Debschitz in Wiesbaden!

On Sunday, March 30, 2025, the runoff election for the office of mayor in Wiesbaden is pending. The citizens of the state capital decide between the acting mayor Gert-Uwe Mende from the SPD and the non-party candidate Thilo von Debschitz. Around 200,000 eligible voters are called up to give up their vote.

Gert-Uwe Mende, who has been in office since July 2, 2019, is aiming for a second term. He pursues ambitious projects such as the renovation of the Walhalla Theater, the new land use plan and the development of the Ostfeld district. This includes the construction of 10,000 new apartments. Mende emphasizes that 1,400 new apartments have been realized annually since 2021 and also invested 470 million euros in schools. However, Mende also sees himself as a non -partisan and receives support from the left and the Greens.

election campaign and challenges

Thilo von Debschitz, on the other hand, criticizes his competitor for inadequate business development and the lack of commercial space. Traffic is a central concern for von Debschitz, who promises to look for pragmatic solutions. He also plans to reform the administration's entrepreneurial structures and wants to install a department for tarpaulins and construction as well as one for digitization. Despite his lack of political experience, Debschitz considered this as an advantage and wants to put together a creative team.

In the first ballot, Mende received 37 percent of the vote and was 7 percentage points ago by Debschitz, which came to 30 percent. While Mende has grown in the population, there is a significant turnout: this dropped to 43.3 percent compared to 53.5 percent in the 2019 election. This could be a challenge for both candidates who have to move their voters to the urns.

voice behavior and forecasts

In the first ballot,

mende benefited from a less stressful election campaign and the weakness of the Greens, which only received 14.6 percent of the votes after they were still 23.4 percent in 2019. Almost half of all votes (48.1%) were submitted by postal voting, and Debschitz received 32.7 percent in the area of the letter voters compared to Mende.

In the runoff election, the voters of the Greens and the left could tend to decide for Mende, which could give him a decisive advantage in this second round. In the last 2019 runoff election, the turnout was only 32.1 percent, and the results of the Bundestag election seemed to have no significant influences in this context.

The decisions that are now made could have far -reaching consequences for the future of Wiesbaden and its citizens. The election on March 30th will show whether Mende can continue to lead the city's fortunes or whether Debschitz will provide new impulses.
