Höxter reacts: New afternoon care planned for schools!
The city of Höxter plans to improve afternoon care in secondary schools in order to better react to the increased need. According to a query in the school committee on March 25, 2025, the need for homework and afternoon care increased significantly. So far, the students have been looked after in midday care from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by further leisure activities until around 3:30 p.m. These measures should offer families in Höxter more reliable support.
Mayor Daniel Hartmann underlines the importance of stable afternoon care for families in the city. "We have to make sure that all children who need a place actually get one," he emphasizes. This becomes all the more important, since the declining number of registrations at the Realschule causes concern among parents and the impression can arise that there is a lack of reliable support offers in certain school forms. A comprehensive offer is therefore not only a question of educational justice, but also of family friendliness.
expanded care offers
The city administration is currently working on a concept for designing afternoon care, which is to be presented to the political committees for advice. It is planned that the extended care offer is available, especially for grades 5 and 6 at both schools. The necessary funds are to be taken into account in the draft budget for 2025, which will be presented to the Council on May 22, 2025. This was also supported by the website https://sekundarschule-hoexter.de/service/betreuungsweitbote/, where the existing afternoon care offers are explained more precisely. The support on school days without afternoon lessons, especially Tuesdays and Fridays, should continue to take place from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The offer of this afternoon care is free and can be chosen by all students depending on their interest. The "Project Encounter gGmbH", an established provider of youth welfare services, takes responsibility for the support offers in the Höxter school center. Under the direction of Mirjam Sandfort, the team has grown to around 10 employees who have been working in Höxter since 2006
social pedagogical support
In addition to the general afternoon care, a social pedagogical offer is also provided, which is particularly aimed at children with increased needs. This offer is promoted by the youth welfare and aims to facilitate access to support resources, as on the website of the Diakoniewerk Essen is.The joy of the upcoming improvements is great. Mayor and head of school hope for broad political support for the plans. Supervision offers should not only be attractive for the children, but also make an important contribution to educational justice and to strengthen school locations in Höxter.
