Kassel swimming pool relies on AI: 21 cameras for more security!
In the Kassel Auebad, a new technology is introduced to increase the safety of the bathers. Today, 21 cameras were installed that are able to recognize emergency situations in the swimming pool. This measure takes place against the background of an increased proportion of people who cannot swim or can only swim inadequate. In recent years there have been no drowning cases in the Auebad, for which the trained staff is held responsible. Nevertheless, it is worrying that an employee has to jump into the pool about once a month to save a bathing guest. Distracts from smartphones, especially parents, increase the risk of children through inadequate supervision.
The cameras are installed above the 50-meter sports pool, the teaching pool and the leisure pool, while monitoring in the paddling pool is not possible due to the water depth. The planned AI system should support the supervisory staff, not replace. These intelligent cameras have already been successfully used in swimming pools in Wiesbaden, Lippstadt and Munich and are characterized by a detection rate of over 95 percent when it comes to identifying drowning people.
how the AI systems
A decisive component of the system is the ability of the cameras to distinguish between adults, children and objects in the water. They are also able to analyze movement patterns. In an emergency, the system provides the supervisory staff through alarm signals that are received via smartwatches. A total of ten smartwatches should be available to relieve the staff and to be able to react quickly to dangerous situations.
The trial run for the AI system will take six weeks to train the system. It is ensured that all data collected stays in the swimming pool and are not saved externally. This is done to ensure data protection. So far there have been similar systems in Germany as in the panorama bath in Freudenstadt, where AI and camera technology are also used successfully for the safety of the swimmers.
international development and future prospects
Developments in German swimming pool security follow an international trend in which AI-supported video surveillance is becoming increasingly important. The technology enables early detection of potential dangerous situations, such as motionless or sinking people. This innovative technology can gain vital seconds that can be decisive in emergencies.
The introduction of such systems could also take place in other Kassel baths as soon as the trial run in the Auebad has been successfully completed. A faster intervention of rescuers could help reduce the number of drowning accidents, which in recent years are not only in Kassel, but also nationwide a worrying topic.
