The participants had previously prevailed in school and regional competitions. In an exciting atmosphere, musically accompanied by Evelyn Warjuschin on the piano, the children showed their reading skills.

challenges and objectives

During the first round, the students had to read three minutes from a selected book, followed by a second round in which they read from an unknown compulsory text for two minutes. The jury assessed the contributions in relation to reading technology, interpretation and text selection. In this round, Jürgen Ulrich and Jennifer Stein sat on the jury, who examined a total of eight girls and four boys.

The reading competition aims to arouse the joy of reading and promote the reading skills of the young participants. Around 600,000 students take part in the competition annually, which makes him one of the largest reading promotion campaigns in Germany. This happens against the background that, according to the IGLU study, 25% of elementary school students cannot understand texts, an alarming trend that now also affects the social and political participation of young people.

District Administrator Achim Hallerbach congratulated the young winners and emphasized the importance of reading these days. Jule and Emilia are looking forward to their next challenge: the state decision in Mainz in May 2025. There they will compete in the competition for the title of the best reader in the country. In recognition of their services, all participants received a certificate and a copy of the book "The Wonderful Talents of the Calendario Siblings" by Louisa Söllner.

The grand finale of the competition takes place on June 25, 2025 in Berlin, where 16 national winners fight for the champion. The competition is organized by the Book Culture and Reading Promotion of the Börsenverein of the German Book Trade and is under the patronage of the Federal President. This not only promotes reading fun, but also emphasized the importance of books in society.
