Discounter Kodi filed for bankruptcy on March 1, 2025 and opened a procedure in self -government. The main cause of bankruptcy is a "massive loss of sales" and increased costs, including for energy, freight and advertising. The company said that it currently operates 238 branches in Germany, in which around 1,800 people are employed. The annual turnover was around 130 million euros in 2024.

In the following, Kodi has reached an agreement with a consortium around partner Richard Nölle, who plans to take over 150 of the 230 branches. Around 1,200 employees are employed in the branches taken over, whose wages and salaries are secured until further notice. Nevertheless, 80 branches are expected to be closed, which concerns around 480 employees in these locations and another 40 at the headquarters.

In the affected branches, a sale of the goods will take place for a period of about two months. The bankruptcy proceedings enable the renovators to initiate restructuring measures on their own by experts in this area. A comprehensive renovation plan is to be presented by spring 2025. The management is also active in search of investors who are interested in the branches threatened by closure. Kodi was founded in 1981 and offers a range of around 2,700 articles in different areas, including drugstores, household, cleaning, stationery and food. Around ten branches have had to be closed in the past few months after contracts have expired. An appointment is scheduled for a believer meeting in mid -May 2025 to decide on the future of the company and the further steps.
