Cologne in the crisis: Henning Krautmacher warns of the wholesale descent!
Henning Krautmacher, the former front man of the Cologne band "Höhner", comments in a recent interview with the Krautmacher is concerned about the urban planning, which in his view gets moving through “Klüngel” and criticizes the exorbitant costs for urban projects. His commitment applies in particular to the Cologne wholesale market, which should close by the end of 2025.
Cologne wholesale market - an important meeting point
The city plans to build the new residential area "Parkstadt Süd" on the site of the wholesale market in Cologne-Raderberg. But the dealers are faced with a precarious situation: their lease contracts have been terminated to clear the site, although the political groups in the Cologne city council (SPD, FDP, left) have applied for five years. This topic will be coordinated in the city council on Thursday.
Christian Joosten from the SPD sees the extension of the contracts as no alternative, since no other location is available for the wholesale market. He describes the laying as unrealistic because the current site will not be built in the next five years. The wholesale market plays a central role in the region because many dealers and restaurateurs are drawn to fruit and vegetables there.
Krautmacher supports these concerns and warns of the negative consequences if the closures should actually occur. Jörg Detjen from the left strikes in the same direction and emphasizes that the decline of the wholesale market would also endanger the weekly markets in Cologne
The city has considered moving the wholesale market to Cologne-Marsdorf. However, a suitable investor for this project has so far been missing. Norbert Heep, a dealer for over 40 years, sees Marsdorf as a good alternative. Improved motorway connection should make the location attractive, but HEEP warns that his company has to leave Cologne if the laying should not work. This could also endanger the city's trade tax revenue.
Krautmacher as storyteller
In the middle of these political and economic issues, Krautmacher works on a book that deals with Cologne places and their name stories. This work is to appear in autumn and will also contain “cookie recipes” that are connected to the respective stories. An example is a biscuit that has the cannabis plant on the subject, but is of course prepared without cannabis.
The challenges that Cologne currently stands could prove to be a signal for a deeper discussion about urban development and the identity of the cathedral city. Krautmacher is aware of this and uses his commitment to draw attention to these problems.
