Cologne scholarship promotes creative urban developers: projects for the future!

On March 21, 2025, the Gottfried Böhm scholarship gained new attention when Dr. Ermelinda di Chiara, the first scholarship holder of 2024, presented her results in Cologne. The scholarship, which was launched by the city of Cologne and the Association of Friends and Sponsors of the Technical University of Cologne, offers its scholarship holders the opportunity to live in Cologne for a year free of charge and to receive 2,500 euros a month. The aim is to develop creative ideas for the Cologne city landscape and beyond. This year the scholarship will be awarded for the second time, whereby the tender is aimed at experienced architects, urban planners and young professionals.

The focus of di Chiara's project is the sustainable redesign of the Cologne Neustadt. Your draft entitled "The Void for A Sustainable City" includes a number of innovative measures, including the conversion of the Neustadt into a car -free zone and the creation of new green areas. The draft also provides for the structural addition of existing apartment blocks to create green courtyards, as well as the construction of mobility stations along the railway embankment.

sustainability and urban development

Mayor Henriette Reker emphasized the relevance of sustainable urban development and innovative architecture during the presentation. The Cologne approach to urban planning is particularly important because over 50% of the world's population now lives in urban areas, and in Germany it is even 75%. The United Nations forecasts suggest that this trend will continue until 2050, which increases the pressure on urban infrastructures.

The redesign of the urban space requires a balance between current and future living conditions. Interdisciplinarity plays a crucial role here. The challenges of sustainability are varied: air pollution from fossil energies, the endangerment of green areas and the lack of water due to climate change are just a few of the central themes. The social aspects that are often neglected in planning are also decisive

goal of the scholarship

The Gottfried Böhm scholarship is launched to honor the Pritzker-Prize bearer Gottfried Böhm, who died in 2021. It is not just financial support, but an incentive to deal with urban issues. Professor Sylvia Heuchemer and Susanne Fabry emphasize the importance of the scholarship for creative urban planning approaches. The exhibition of the results of di Chiara's work can be seen until October 15, 2024 in the Spanish construction of the historic town hall.

applications for the upcoming scholarship are possible by May 31, 2025, with the interested architects being able to submit a specific project idea. Those responsible hope that these measures can promote new, innovative approaches to architecture in order to redesign Cologne and its surroundings.
