Cologne traffic turnaround: decision about the east-west axis postponed again!
The decision on the controversial east-west axis in Cologne is out again. Originally scheduled for today, February 13, 2025, the special meeting of the Transport Committee was canceled at short notice, and there was no agreement at the planned Council meeting in the afternoon. The project, which is considered the largest Cologne traffic project of the 2020s, continues. The planned route should run between Deutz and Aachener Weiher and operated underground and on their own network. The Metrobahnen should be a priority, not the city railways of the Cologne Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB) ostwestache.koeln .
In order to ensure safety for pedestrians, the pedestrian crossing Hohe Straße, for example, requires at least 53 seconds to cross, for visually impaired people it is even at least 59 seconds. The current traffic situation leads to already critical conditions that make it difficult to cross smoothly and, in some cases, lead to delays in the light rail.
connection projects and infrastructure
The extension of line 7 to Langel-Süd is also planned as part of the infrastructure measures. This first construction stage is expected to expand the existing line by two stops and could be realized in 2025, provided that the planning approval process is quick. The route will extend over approx. 1.3 kilometers on Wahner Straße and is mainly to open up a newly planned construction area, which could probably attract 7,000 new passengers stadt-koeln.de .In a second construction stage, the route will lead over the free field, setting up two to three stops to develop Langels. The length of this expansion level will be about 3 kilometers. The integration of this new route into the existing line network is closely related to the extensions of line 17.
