Concert series Organ music in the evening starts in the 26th season!

A special musical tradition begins in the Wendelinus basilica: The concert series "Organ music in the evening" invites you to the first event in its 26th year. On August 5, 2025, this popular cycle starts with a guest organist, and the concerts take place in the usual, fourteenth day. The first concert evening begins at 8:00 p.m..
The events offer musical pleasure for an hour, with both the organic organist and internally renowned guest organists design the programs. Admission to the concerts is free, but a donation is requested to cover the costs, which takes into account the tradition of this series. According to the website of the Wendalinus parish, the Klais organ is emphasized as one of the highlights that are characterized by 57 sounding registers and excellent acoustics, which optimally brings out different music styles. wndn reports that ...

The roots of this concert series go far back. The first row was launched in 1971 under the leadership of Professor Herbert Liedecke, which marked the start of an international concert series. At the premiere, Liedecke presented a demanding work by Max Reger, which demonstrated the quality of the organ and acoustics in the basilica. In the following years there was a sustainable interest in organ music in the community and far beyond. This was promoted by the new musical impulses and the voluntary organization by committed parishioners who built up friendships with the invited artists over the years.

variety of guest organists

Over the years, numerous guest organists have enriched the concert series. The list of musicians includes prominent names such as Joachim Assmann from Koblenz, Mathias Balzer from Trier and numerous other talents from Germany and abroad. This variety brings various musical styles and interpretations to the Wendelinus basilica, which makes the series attractive for a wide audience. In order to fully present the list of invited artists, we have prepared some of the previous participants:

  • Prof. Dücktel, Norbert (Regensburg/Detmold)
  • Ehlbeck, Martin (Hanover)
  • Seifried, Peter-Michael (Jerusalem, Il)
  • Fiseisky, Alexander (Moscow, Rus)
  • Hielscher, Hans-Uwe (Wiesbaden)
  • Utz, Michael (Brauweiler)

The challenge of hiring these top -class musicians not only includes the coordination of appointments and fees, but also the logistical planning to the accommodation of the artists. The acoustics of the Wendelinus basilica, which was already recognized at the reward of the organ in 1967, plays a crucial role in the success of the concerts. A well-tuning organ and a pleasant atmosphere contribute significantly to the quality of the events at , as can be found on the website.

The sovereignty over the organ and the regularly organized concerts also represent financial and organizational challenges for the parish. However, thanks to numerous volunteers and the constant support from the community, the concert series can continue to be continued. So the Wendelinus basilica remains a place of cultural encounters and musical inspiration.
