Critical retaining wall at primary school: community faces a renovation drama!

Visible cracks are clear indications of the lack of stability, so that the "reliable stability" of the wall can no longer be guaranteed. This construction was built about 60 years ago and is located in a critical point that acts as an access area for several important facilities.

The danger situation forces the municipality to act: a renovation is urgently needed to ensure security. The estimated costs for the necessary work amount to around 280,000 euros. It is planned to reinforce the supportive wall with concrete straps. When it came to the previous coordination for the renovation, however, questions arose that affect the passage for emergency vehicles.

The new belts would estimate the driveway by 30 to 40 centimeters. An engineer admitted that the problem of the passage width has so far not been sufficiently taken into account. Due to the importance of access for fire brigade and emergency services, alternatives must be considered and the current passage width has to be checked. A more radical option that was considered would be the demolition of the entire wall and a new building, which, however, would cost around 400,000 euros.

The local council attaches particular importance to the fact that the new wall looks appealing. A greening and the appearance could play an important role in redesign. However, the planner pointed out that vegetation would have to be removed every six years in order to examine the structural integrity of the wall. In this context, an evergreen coat of paint was discussed as a possible solution to ensure both aesthetics and functionality.

The situation around the retaining wall not only causes local but also national attention. The question of how the security standards can be preserved in connection with ecological perspectives brings with it a variety of challenges.
