Food security in the Rhein-Sieg district: critical controls revealed!
The focus last year was the controls in the context of consumer protection in the veterinary and food surveillance office of the Rhein-Sieg district. In particular, the authorities dealt more intensively with the monitoring of food distributors and combating pest infestation in supermarkets. On the occasion of the World Consumer Day on March 15, 2025, the Rhein-Sieg district drew attention to these important topics. The checks are part of the comprehensive efforts to ensure the safety of food and ensure that consumers are protected. The Rhein-Sieg-Kreis supports the sustainable practice of distributing foods that are not sold but are still edible. This often includes products whose best before date will soon be reached. Operators of such distribution points are obliged to ensure that the food is harmless to health. The hygiene conditions and compliance with the cold chain play a central role here. Last year, a total of seven focus controls were carried out by registered food distributors, with minor defects in five cases.
pest control in supermarkets
Another central topic is the increased reports of pest infestation in supermarkets. The topic was heavily discussed in public and especially on social networks. The official reviews of the veterinary office showed that both cockroaches and mice were found in several companies. A total of 100 supermarkets and food discounters were checked. In nine of these controls, an infestation with mice was confirmed, while in a further case it was scratched and in 23 companies flight insects such as moths were found.
83 of the controlled companies caught strict standards by carrying out regular pest controls. 88 of these companies worked with external pest fighters. When the infestation has occurred, the operators received instructions and an intensification of pest control measures was arranged. In some cases, even fine procedures were initiated.
legal framework and controls
The legal basis for food surveillance in Germany is far -reaching and adapted to European standards. In the EU, food law is regulated in Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002 and the Control Ordinance (EU) 2017/625 based on it. These regulations aim to protect consumers' health and ensure that only safe foods are placed on the market. Regular risk -based controls by the responsible authorities of the federal states are necessary for this.
The food surveillance authorities work closely with trained inspectors, food chemists and veterinarians to ensure the quality and safety of food. Consumers can report defects in hygiene or incorrect awards directly to the food surveillance authority. The requirements and procedures of official control are specified in Germany by the general administrative regulation (AVV Rüb). These measures contribute to compliance with the strict guidelines of the EU and to secure consumers' health.
For consumers in the Rhein-Sieg district, it remains important to be informed about the controls and the measures for food safety in order to ensure trust in the quality of the products offered.
