Membership boom at the Greens and Left: Record numbers rush over!

The political changes in Germany seem to create a remarkable dynamic. In the past few days, the Greens and the left have reported an extraordinary number of membership applications. According to Radio Euskirchen , the Greens have recorded over 5,000 new applications in just five days, which is a new record for the party. Pegah Edalatian, the political managing director of the Greens, leads this increase to the recent political developments in particular the cooperation between Friedrich Merz (CDU) with the AfD.

DIE LINKE also benefited from this wave. After a joint vote by Union and AfD in the Bundestag, they registered new membership applications within 24 hours. In the following days, almost 5,900 further applications were added. The left currently has 71,277 members, the highest number since 2010. The party was still 60,060 members on the party congress on January 18, 2023.

political motivation for the increase

The reason for the large number of new memberships, according to Edalatian, seems to be concerned about the CDU's cooperation policy under Friedrich Merz. On Wednesday, Merz submitted an application in the Bundestag to limit migration, which only received a majority through the votes of the AfD. A similar proposal failed on the following Friday due to the lack of support from the parties CDU/CSU and FDP, despite the support by the Afd.

These developments are also reflected in the number of members of the AfD. As of December 31, 2024, the party had 51,370 members, an increase of 50,000 members in mid -November. The other Bundestag parties did not provide current membership numbers on request.

increase in the number of members in the Greens and the left

The Greens also show many new faces through campaign events, which are led by Chancellor Robert Habeck and Co-top candidate Annalena Baerbock. Due to the high crowds, the party plans larger venues with video walls to give more people access to these events.

This development can be interpreted in response to the ongoing political shifts and decisions in Germany. The flood of membership applications is a sign of a growing political interest and possibly even for mobilizing voters who want to position themselves clearly against the cooperation between rights and conservative forces.
