New operational clothing for THW: Focus on security and comfort!

The THW local association Simmern is enjoying an important innovation: the new operational clothing, known as a multifunctional operating suit 2.0 (MEA 2.0), has arrived. This comprehensive, robust clothing is aimed at the specific needs and challenges that the THW helpers encounter during their missions. Multifunctionality, security and well-being of the emergency services are in the foreground, reports the Wochenspiegel .

The development of the MEA 2.0 was carried out by a working group that includes both full-time and voluntary THW members. Different aspects were taken into account in the design: the different risk potential of the THW tasks and the feedback from the emergency services to the previous model, MEA 1.0. In addition, experience from other security organizations at home and abroad came into the creation process.

First practical test and feedback

After the first practical test in two nationwide responsible training centers of the THW, the new design was promising. Course participants gave extensive feedback to optimize the operational clothing. Daniel Baumgarte, train driver of the Simmern local association, expressed a positive statement about the quality of the new suit and expects a good performance.

The MEA 2.0 is not only robust, but also multifunctional and comfortable, tailored to the wide range of uses of the THW. This includes support in forest fires, in extreme weather events such as heavy rain or floods and even when operating on the high seas.

securing the equipment

Another step to improve the operating conditions represents the delivery of 16,000 foldable, rainproof trolleys, which were financed by the THW foundation that was financed by the THW. These trolleys were purchased with the aim of protecting the personal equipment of the THW forces from water and pollution. Several prominent representatives of the THW and the foundation took part in the donation handover, including Stephan Mayer (MdB, CEO Foundation THW) and Sabine Lackner (THW Vice President).

The support of the THW helpers was particularly in demand in July 2021 when the storm low "Bernd" required the greatest commitment in the history of the THW. Over 4,000 forces were used every day to save people, do pumping work and secure the local infrastructure.

technical details of the equipment

The THW operations not only bear multifunctional use suits, but are also equipped with an extensive protective equipment set. The basic building blocks include special pants, T-shirts and fleece jackets, while additional equipment includes helmet, safety boots and gloves. The materials, including Nomex and Kevlar, offer high cutting and stabbing as well as severe flame protection, such as the Official website of the thw explained.

Thanks to a special climate membrane that is integrated in jacket, pants and shoes, the operational clothing remains dry and protected from wind and cold, while sweat is derived from the outside. This innovative equipment represents the ongoing efforts of the THW to continuously expand and improve the security freedom of its emergency services.
