New rules for stoves: old models have to get out by the end of the year!

With the end of 2024, stoves that exceed certain emission limit values may no longer be operated. This regulation is based on the Federal Immission Control Protection Ordinance (BImSchV), which has been in force since 2010. Chimney sweeps are encouraged to inform their customers about the new regulations. From January 1, 2025, the operation of stoves that do not adhere to the limit values for fine dust and carbon monoxide is prohibited.

older ovens that were put into operation between January 1, 1995 and March 21, 2010 are the focus of these changes. These models must either be retrofitted or decommissioned by December 31, 2024. The new emission limit values stipulate that a maximum of 0.15 grams of dust and 4 grams of carbon monoxide per cubic meter of exhaust gas can be given. For operators of older devices, there is now a decision whether they want to adapt or no longer use their stoves.

exams and disposal

A certificate from a chimney sweep or the manufacturer is necessary for compliance with the new requirements. This applies in particular to stoves that were installed before 2010, since only newer models that were put into operation after 2010 automatically meet the required standards. The chimney sweeps also offer measurements to check compliance and the "fireplace show" takes place every seven years.

stoves that may no longer be used due to the new regulations are not necessarily scrap. Advice by chimney sweep is recommended. Peter Niethen, managing director of an oven studio, has found an increased interest in new stoves. The delivery times for these devices are currently about three months, prices start at around 2500 euros and can reach up to 6000 euros. Retrofitting of older stoves with electrostatic fine dust filters can be expensive, up to 3500 euros.

The Rhein-Sieg-Waste Wirtschaftsgesellschaft (RSAG) advises the careful disposal of stoves, especially if there is asbestos. Newer devices must be freed from ashest before disposal, while the flock stones can be released in mineral landfills. Old metal parts of stoves can be disposed of as waste metal, and waste metal dealers like Dominik Kotyrba offer picking up of old stoves if the shamot stones have been removed.

The upcoming changes aim to improve air quality and reduce environmental pollution from fine dust and other emissions, as have set the new regulations for fireplace and wood stoves from 2025.
