According to Alzheimer,Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, which is an estimated at least 200,000 people in Germany. With an increasing tendency, the majority of the sick people are based on the age of over 60, with about 10% already falling ill before the age of 50. Even if juvenile forms of the disease are rare, they can be horrible if they meet young people aged around 20 years. In addition, those affected are usually mostly men, with a ratio of around 50% more male than female affected.
self -help groups as important contact points
The regional group St. Wendel von Jung and Parkinson's, which was launched in August 2022, now has 30 members. This group is aimed at those affected by all ages as well as their partners and relatives. The meetings take place every second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. in room 2.13 of the UTZ, the next meeting is planned on February 10th. The exchange and mutual support are in the foreground.
Another example of self -help groups can be found in Frankfurt am Main. There the group "Des-Des-Parkinson" brings together those affected and their relatives. The aim is to share information and promote an open exchange. In addition to the monthly meetings, the group offers information events, lectures and joint activities. The symptoms of Parkinson's include Akinese, Rigor and Restremor - a slowly progressive disease that is terminally, but can be treated for years.
symptoms and treatment
The most common symptoms include tremors, slowed movements and disorders that can occur early on, such as depression and sleep disorders. The progressive illness stems from the death of the dopamine -producing nerve cells in the substantia nigra, which leads to a lack of dopamine and thus results in movement disorders.
In the Frankfurt region, several specialist clinics such as the Gertrudis Klinik Bismirchen and the University Hospital Frankfurt offer treatment offers. Here, those affected can benefit from expert knowledge and receive therapeutic support to reduce their symptoms. At the monthly meetings of the Frankfurt self -help group, which take place every Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., those affected can also receive important information through mutual exchange. The next dates are January 18, 2025 and February 15, 2025.
In this way, self -help groups, such as those in St. Wendel and Frankfurt, make a valuable social contribution to the better quality of life of people with Parkinson's and their relatives. Support and the feeling of not being alone create an important basis for dealing with the disease in these groups.
