New nursing home in Eschwege: groundbreaking for 25 million euros project!

On February 5, 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony for a new AWO care home on Döhlestrasse was celebrated in Eschwege. This construction project is the largest investment of the Workers' Welfare (AWO) since 1945.

With the new building, the AWO aims to create modern care places and to improve the existing structures. The planned care and residential complex will offer 90 additional care places in six house communities. In addition, renovation measures are intended for the already existing old buildings, with the aim of offering around 55 modern, senior -friendly apartments after completion. The completion of the new building is scheduled for the end of 2026.

goals and community offers

The primary goal of the new building is the creation of an open campus to act as a meeting place. "We want to create a place where people can feel good and interact with each other," explained Thomas Hoffmann, head of the AWO senior center. The AWO enjoys an excellent reputation in the region and already offers a variety of short-term care services. Currently, the residents are housed in a AWO senior center over 50 years old, the condition of which is no longer up to date.

Dietmar Janz from Sparkasse Werra-Meißner and Mayor Alexander Heppe expressed a positive comment on the project during the groundbreaking ceremony and emphasized its importance for the region. The AWO will have to spend five million euros for the implementation of the project.

Current situation of senior care

The new AWO nursing home comes at a time when the need for nursing places increases continuously due to demographic change, legal framework and the increasing need for care. A study overview shows that the construction of care facilities in the coming years will be necessary to meet this demand. According to a nursing database, numerous new buildings are planned and already under construction to close this gap.

The AWO follows an approach in its nursing concept that focuses on the independence and individuality of the residents. Particular attention also applies to people with dementia. The AWO senior center in Eschwege is currently offering a pleasant atmosphere, supported by a qualified nursing staff and numerous leisure activities that are supplemented by volunteers.

The facilities are currently equipped with common rooms and spacious gardens that are beneficial for the social interaction of the residents. The quiet location on the outskirts also enables a look at the surrounding nature and ensures a pleasant environment.

Overall, the new building on Döhlestraße will not only be a significant progress in the field of elderly care, but also offer the opportunity to significantly improve the quality of life of the seniors through modern living and care concepts. The groundbreaking thus marks the beginning of an important chapter in senior care in Eschwege.
