New supply concept in Gießen: Heart weakness in older patients in focus!

The University Clinic Gießen has now presented an innovative supply concept that was specially developed for older patients with heart failure. This new approach aims to improve treatment from larger surgical interventions. The study is coordinated in Gießen and includes four other university clinics in Germany, including renowned institutions in Berlin, Würzburg, Rostock and Hamburg.

The central goal of this multicenter study is to increase the quality of life of the patients and reduce the risk of postoperative complications. Heart failure often occurs in older people, often without pronounced symptoms, which can lead to a late diagnosis before operations, as presseportal.de

identification of risk patients

patients aged 65 and over, who have an increased risk of postoperative complications, are identified using the NT-Pro-BNP biomarker. In addition, a special consultation hour for risk patients is set up in which heart investigations and risk assessments are made. Interdisciplinary case reviews with anesthesiologists, cardiologists and surgeons are also part of the new process to ensure an optimal therapy adjustment.

The project, which bears the name "Perioperative Interdisciplinary, Intersectoral Process Optimization in Heart Failure" (Periop-Care HF), is funded by the Innovation Fund of the Federal Committee of Joint. This financial support enables the institutions involved to implement comprehensive monitoring measures before, during and after the operations.

collaboration and long -term goals

Another focus of the project is in the structured aftercare by specially trained staff, the so -called Heart Failure Nurses. These specialists are crucial for the individual support of the patients during the perioperative phase and contribute to reducing the risk of postoperative complications, such as the post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF).

postoperative atrial fibrillation is a common complication that occurs not only during cardiac interventions, but also after non-cardiac operations. A Danish cohort study has shown that patients who suffer from Poaf have a significantly increased risk of developing heart failure. These findings emphasize the need for intensive postoperative surveillance, such as Gelbe-liste.de informed.

The goal is to check the advantages of the new supply model in the German health system, for example to shorten stays in intensive care units and reduce treatment costs by avoidable complications. With the promotion of the project for over 36 months to 2027, those responsible at the University Clinic Gießen hope for sustainable improvements in the care and treatment of patients with heart failure from larger surgical interventions.
