North Korea increases rocket program: Kim Jong Un threatens nuclear weapons!

On February 8, 2025, the North Korean news agency KCNA published a clear message: the country's nuclear program is not a negotiation. This program is viewed as an essential part of national security and serves the fight against enemy aggressors. KCNA describes the nuclear arsenal of North Korea as unchangeable and as a practical weapon for the quick connection of aggression. This perspective is part of the policy of "boundless nuclear armament" propagated by the North Korean leadership.

In the meantime, US President Donald Trump has confirmed his position on the denuclearization of North Korea at a meeting with the Japanese Premier Shigeru Ishiba in Washington. Trump emphasized that he was able to maintain a good relationship with Kim Jong Un and described the relationship with the North Korean leader as an advantage for everyone. Despite three meetings, the first of which took place in Singapore, Trump's unconventional North Korea policy, which merged from threats to direct diplomacy, did not lead to an agreement on the country's denuclearization. These meetings also included a summit in Hanoi and a appearance in the demilitarized zone of Koreas in June 2019.

nuclear ambitions and military tensions

The rhetoric from Pyongyang remains unmistakable: Kim Jong Un threatened to use nuclear weapons in the event of a violation of the sovereignty of his country. This aggressive occurrence is also underpinned by the project to drastically increase the number of nuclear weapons. It is estimated that North Korea has around 50 atomic explosive heads and has been affected by international sanctions due to its nuclear program for decades. This marked the last nuclear test in 2017.

The long way to denuclearization

The United States calls for complete, verifiable and irreversible disarmament of the North Korean atomic arsenal, but the prospects for substantial progress are low. In the past, North Korea has not taken any serious disarmament steps and plans to keep parts of its nuclear program secret. In the international community there are concerns that the disarmament could take several years, possibly 10 to 15 years.

The Korean Peninsula is one of the most militarized regions in the world, which has existed since the Korean War (1950-1953) without a formal peace treaty. Experts and political analysts are concerned about the continued development of North Korea's nuclear weapons and rockets, since the country continues to produce nuclear gap material and expand its facilities. These developments illustrate the complexity of diplomatic relationships between North Korea and the United States that are currently practically not available.

like Radio Leverkusen reports, the ideology of Pyöngjang, the nuclear upgrade is indispensable, in a strong contrast to the American Requirements for disarmament. This discrepancy shapes the geopolitical landscape and gives hope for a constructive solution.

In summary, the atomic commitment of North Korea remains a significant threat to both regional and global security. The complexity of this situation is reinforced by the recurring military activities of the country and the unequal diplomatic efforts. This makes negotiations on the North Korean nuclear program one of the most pressing challenges of today.
