Bochum Central Station: Massive closure brings commuters to the bredouille!
On March 1, 2025, the significant restriction of train traffic during the closure of the Bochum main station can be felt. This block was initiated on February 28, 2025 at 9 p.m. and will continue until April 25, 2025. Deutsche Bahn has decided this measure as part of the RRX expansion plans to modernize the infrastructure.
The blocking is associated with extensive restrictions for commuters and travelers. Although the S1 (DB Regio) continues to drive from Dortmund Hbf to Essen Hbf every quarter of an hour, passengers have to switch to replacement buses at weekends. These buses start at two stops near the main train station:
- Universitätsstraße (towards Essen)
- Buddenbergplatz/Ferdinandstraße (direction Dortmund and Witten)
In addition, replacement traffic is extended in the evening to the Hamm (Westf.) Hbf. Additional buses between Essen Hbf, Wattenscheid, Bochum West, Bochum Hbf and Witten Hbf are used. SEV taxis between Essen-Steele-Ost and Essen Hbf is also available at night.
operating restrictions and long -distance traffic
During the closure, several train lines will not start the Bochum main station. These include:
line | connection |
---|---|
Re 1 | aachen to Hamm |
Re 6 | Minden to Cologne/Bonn Airport |
Re 11 | Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe to Düsseldorf |
Re 16 | Eat according to Iserlohn |
RB 32 | Dortmund to Duisburg |
RB 40 | Eat to Hagen |
RE 41 | Bochum to Haltern am See |
RB 46 | Gelsenkirchen to Bochum |
s2 | Dortmund to Essen |
long -distance transport is also severely restricted during this time. Neither ICE nor IC will stop at Bochum Central Station. The long -distance trains are diverted between Essen and Dortmund and between Essen and Münster, which can lead to an extension of the travel times by up to 20 minutes.
planned construction work and future developments
The construction work as part of the RRX expansion plans is also carried out at the Bochum main station. This includes the installation of 11 km of new tracks and the expansion of the platform, while in Wattenscheid an extension of the person underpass and ordnance probes take place. The work is intended to help enter and extend it on another platform.
Bochum has a long history in railway construction, starting with the opening of the Witten - Bochum route in 1860. The Bochum main station, built by architect Heinz Ruhl and put into operation in 1957, is considered one of the most striking buildings in the city. Extensive renovation has largely restored the original state, which underlines the importance of the station. Future developments provide for the Bochum main station for autumn 2025, from 5 September to October 31, which should contribute to further modernization and improvement of the infrastructure.
