Franco-German friendship: anniversary celebrated in Bucharest!
On January 22, 2025, Germany and France celebrated the 62nd anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, which was signed on January 22, 1963. This contract, signed by Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer, is considered the foundation of the Franco-German friendship and initiated a fundamental redesign of relationships between the two countries after the Second World War. In Bucharest, the German ambassador Dr. Peer Gebauer and the French ambassador Nicolas Warnery this special occasion together with Romanian partners.
The sixth anniversary of the Aachen contract was also recognized at the celebrations, which was signed by Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron on January 22, 2019. This modern contract updated and expanded the topics of the Élysée contract, especially in the areas of youth, research, security and development. Germany and France have been implementing the Aachen Treaty since January 2020, with 15 priority projects already being set to deepen the cooperation and to initiate new projects.joint projects and initiatives
As part of the Aachen Treaty, the following focuses were identified in 2019:
- Strengthening the cooperation in the VN Security Council.
- Establishment of integrated Franco-German cultural institutions in different cities.

In addition, 13 other projects were decided in May 2021, such as promoting partner language and strengthening cross -border cooperation in the health sector. The Franco-German Council of Ministers monitors the implementation of these initiatives.

During the celebrations on January 22, 2025, the ambassadors Gebauer and Warnery also discussed the importance of Franco-German friendship with students from various schools in Bucharest. In a further discussion, the ambassadors stuck the relevance of the bilateral relationship for European integration and analyzed the current challenges of the EU in the geopolitical context.
