Healthy school: GHS Aretzstrasse relies on fresh fruit and sustainability!

The community secondary school (GHS) Aretzstraße in Aachen has launched a new and innovative project, which promotes awareness of healthy eating and sustainability among students. As part of the "Active for Future" program, which has been supporting schools in Aachen since 2022, the students receive weekly fruit and vegetable crates for a "healthy break breakfast".

Each of the four classes on GHS Aretzstrasse receives a box with fresh food once a week, which is then washed, cut and divided by the students. With this approach, the school is pursuing the goal of no more food left on Friday afternoon in order to actively act against food waste. During the Ramadan, the students sewed additional fabric bags to sustainably pack the distributed fruit and vegetable portions.

Promotion of responsibility and social skills

The project not only acquires knowledge of healthy eating, but also important social skills and knowledge of German. They take on various tasks in the class council, including washing, cutting and rinsing the food. The commitment promotes personal responsibility and offers the students practical insights into regional agriculture.

The GHS Aretzstrasse complements existing initiatives in the area of sustainability, such as the project of the school bees, a school bed and a smoothie bike. This is part of a broader strategy to sensitize children early on to the topics of health and the environment.

Support from "Active for Future"

The next application round for the "Active for Future" funding program begins soon. Schools can apply for funding between 100 and 1,000 euros for their sustainability projects by May 15th. The offer not only includes financial support, but also workshops, networking, a sustainability check and the provision of offers from the building management of the city of Aachen. gemuesekiste.com explains that ...

In the past two years, a total of 44 projects have been funded at 26 schools in Aachen, which underlines the importance and success of this program. These initiatives are coordinated by the ESD team of the Climate and Environment Department of the City of Aachen, which aims to sustainably improve school nutrition and to promote children's learning process.

In addition, schools are supported as part of an EU school program that delivers free fruit, vegetables or milk to anchor healthy eating in everyday school life. Schools and daycare centers are therefore asked to register in order to benefit from these offers and thus promote the healthy eating of the children. School program Lower Saxony informs that ...
