Cologne is head: Big events and developments in May 2025!

The week in Cologne is shaped by a variety of important events, while the city is preparing for the long White weekend. One of the most important dates is the opening of the dance fountain on Saturday, May 10, 2025, which is expected with great anticipation. The band Cat Ballou is planned for the celebrations, whose first concert is already sold out. An additional concert in September was also announced. But until the opening, the train commuters in the Cologne area do not have much time to relax.

By May 19, travelers have to adjust to significant restrictions on train traffic. Cologne main station is not served by numerous train lines and the closures are among the most extensive of the past few years. The routes between Cologne and Bonn, Koblenz, Aachen and Euskirchen are particularly affected, whereby switching options were set up at various train stations to offer alternative ways.

Litigation against the Archdiocese of Cologne

Another important date is facing a decision on Tuesday, May 6th, if the Cologne district court announces a decision in the lawsuit against the Archdiocese of Cologne. The focus is on a 58-year-old woman who sues the Archdiocese to 830,000 euros in pain and suffering. She raised serious allegations for sexual abuse by a priest in the 1990s when she was part of a group of valet.

In her complaint, she describes that there were repeated attacks in the community rooms of the community by a group leader who is regarded as the "extended arm" of the then employed pastor. While the archbishopric only admits the inspection of two abuse, the plaintiff claims that there have been much more than 200 sexual assaults, the consequences of which are devastating for those affected.

initiatives, exhibitions and festivals in the city

In parallel to these difficult topics, the city's cultural side will not be neglected in the coming days. The district council of downtown meets on Thursday, May 8th, at 3 p.m. in the Spanish building of the town hall. Here, among other things, an application by the Greens is for temporary seating in the Ehrenstrasse on the agenda.

On Friday, May 9th, the Rhinelandtaler will be awarded to Helmut Haumann for his cultural merit. At the same time, ZAC NRW presents its current annual report on cybercrime. Another highlight will be the eight-bridge festival, which begins on the same day and runs until May 18. 31 concerts and 16 premieres will be experienced under the guiding theme "Licht".

The city of Cologne also celebrates the art with an exhibition dedicated to the photographer Lee Miller. The vernissage will also take place on May 9 at 5 p.m. in Spanish construction on Rathausplatz. At Pentecost, the cultural area Odonien also opens its beer garden season on Sunday, May 11th, from 1 p.m. with a free program for all citizens.
