nights in detail
Various travel categories can be booked in night trains. This includes seats, berths and sleep compartments that can also be used for group trips. An innovation are the mini cabins, the small sleeping capsules in which travelers can spend the night. The booking options are diverse: tickets can be purchased on the website of the "Nightjet", at Deutsche Bahn or in DB sales outlets. Experts recommend booking the tickets optimally six months before the start of the trip to benefit from cheaper prices. The pricing is also attractive. A lounger in the six-lying car starts from 49.90 euros, while a place in the triple sleeping car is available from 79.90 euros. There are places available for barrier -free trips, but it should be noted that the access has close corridors and different entry heights. Travelers with restrictions are advised to contact the Deutsche Bahn mobility center directly.
The ADAC report on night trains
A comprehensive examination by the ADAC, which took a close look at 21 night train connections in Europe, is evidenced by the increasing encouragement to these types of travel. According to the results, 42% of Germans can imagine traveling with a night train. Especially among the younger travelers, between the ages of 18 and 39, approval is even significantly higher at 52%. The advantages are clear: relaxed trips and slept well at the destination.
The compounds examined led from seven German cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne to various European metropolises. The analysis has shown that seven connections could be classified as good direct connections that required a maximum of 15 hours of travel time and no change. An example of this is the connection from Berlin to Stockholm, which can come up with a travel time of 15:20 hours and a price of 96.90 euros.
However, there are also more critical aspects. The examination showed that of 105 possible connections only 55 corresponded to the criteria for night trains. In addition, booking problems are pointed out because there is no uniform booking portal for international connections. Many travelers, about 53%, therefore prefer booking at the counter or in the travel agency. The ADAC also recommends booking tickets in good time, about four to six weeks in advance, to avoid disappointments about booked connections.
