New district heating network in Aachen: Information event for those affected!
The expansion of the district heating supply in Aachen takes on concrete forms. In May 2025, Regionetz GmbH begins with the work on a new district heating street that will lead to the north. This infrastructure measure was considered the central for the future energy supply of the city both by the provider and the city of Aachen. Residents, traders and road users are informed in advance about the project in order to minimize possible impairments. This expansion is supported by important institutions such as Stawag, RWTH, the Aachen University of Applied Sciences as well as the Fraunhofer IEG and the IHK, which all contribute to the goal of establishing climate -neutral heat supply.
On Monday, March 17th, at 6 p.m., an information event will take place in the theater hall of the ACADEMICA cafeteria, Pontwall 3. Experts such as Axel Kahl, Managing Director of Region Netz, and various department heads of the city of Aachen will inform about the background and planning of the new district heating street. The event has the goal of clarifying the citizens about the planned measures and clarifying questions.
background of the district heating supply
The need to expand the district heating supply is undisputed. At the moment, district heating only covers 5% of the heat requirement in Aachen, while 39% are provided via gas. The last block of the Weisweiler lignite power plant, which currently supplies 90% of district heating, will be switched off in spring 2029. It is therefore crucial to develop alternative supply strategies, such as the use of heat from the Wisweiler waste incineration plant and the development of deep geothermal energy.
The city of Aachen and Region Netz invited to an information event in November 2024 to discuss challenges and solutions for sustainable infrastructure development. In this event, which was broadcast live on YouTube, experts performed who presented the current status of the construction work and perspectives for the future. Both experts and citizens were able to actively participate in a discussion round.
heat transition as a joint challenge
The “Heat turnaround Aachen” pursues the goal of making the city a nationwide pioneer for climate -neutral living and working. The planned measures include not only the expansion of the district heating network, but also comprehensive heat planning, which provides owners about future options. The integration of the city society into the process is of central importance.
In order to ensure comprehensive planning security, it is crucial that all actors - from citizens to companies to educational institutions - are mobilized. The "Letter of Intent" represents a declaration of intent to support the heat transition and is intended to create the basis for close cooperation between those involved.
In the coming time, Regionetz GmbH will work intensively to inform the public and prepare for the upcoming changes in the infrastructure. The long -term goals are clear: to create advanced and sustainable energy supply for Aachen.
