Region network starts large construction projects: Future of rainwater in danger!

On April 22, 2025, significant construction projects begin in Aachen, which aim to improve infrastructure and protection against heavy rain. Region network will implement two important projects that are intended to optimize rainwater management in the region.

The first construction project concerns the construction of a new rainwear basin on Walkmühlenstraße and Roermonder Straße. This pelvis will act as a collector and pre-cleaner of rain and surface water. The aim is to clean the dirty water into the torrent before the introduction. The construction period of the rainwear basin is scheduled from April to September 2025. In order to establish the necessary connection to the existing sewer network in Roermonder Straße, preparatory work has already been initiated to relocate existing supply lines.

During the construction work there will be a narrowing of the road, and Walkmühlenstraße is completely blocked for traffic to ensure safe access. Residents and customers of the nearby beverage market can drive to the construction site.

renewal of the supply lines on Welkenrather Straße

The second project focuses on Welkenrather Straße, where the channel and the supply lines such as gas, water and electricity between Junkerstrasse and Welkenrather Straße 63 are renewed. The completion of the project is planned for a period of about a year, also starting on April 22, 2025.

Another important aspect of this project is the planned expansion of district heating supply and broadband technology. In order to ensure safety while carrying out the work, there will also be section -based full closures for motor vehicles that are diverted via Junkerstrasse and Vaalser Straße. In addition, archaeological support for the work will take place, which indicates the historical importance of the area.

For both construction projects, there are considerable advantages, especially with regard to the regulation of the water balance. These measures are part of a more comprehensive plan, which includes the construction of additional rainwater pools to relieve the sewage system in the event of heavy rain events. According to the Federal Environmental Office , the need to collect excess water for heavy rain is of crucial importance to prevent flooding and the water quality of urban rivers.

The city of Aachen and Region Netz emphasize that the implementation of these projects not only contributes to improving the infrastructure, but also a significant contribution to adapting to the challenges of climate change. Due to heavy rain, the construction and renovation of relief structures are to be significantly reduced.
