Train accident near Cologne ensures a chaotic location in rail traffic!
On January 1, 2025, a freight train at Bad Soden-Salmünster lost around two tons of sugar beet. The sugar beet lay on a distance of about one kilometer in and on the track bed, which led to a disturbance of rail traffic between Hanau and Aschaffenburg. At 11:30 a.m. the Technical Aid Agency (THW) was alerted to collect the sugar beet. Around 50 emergency services from the local associations Gelnhausen, Steinau, Wächtersbach and Bad Orb were involved in the campaign. The sugar beets were picked up by hand and loaded onto an aid train from Deutsche Bahn. Fortunately, there was no damage to people, material or load, the greatest danger during the use of animals that could be attracted by the sugar beet.
massive effects on rail traffic
On the same day, a serious accident occurred on the railway line between Cologne and Aachen. A collision of a freight train with a construction train in Kerpen, between Horrem and Düren. The incident led to the derailment of the locomotive and ten wagons of the freight train. The driver suffered serious injuries, while two other people were slightly injured. The fire brigade was alerted at 1:20 a.m. and the use is currently ongoing. There were no dangerous fabrics from the wagons, so that there was no danger to the population.
The effects on rail traffic are considerable: there were train failures and delays. A replacement traffic on buses has been set up between the main train stations in Cologne and Aachen. The following connections are affected: Re 1 (RRX), RE 9 and S 12 and S 19, all of which are faced with partial failures. According to the first assessments of the railway, the route is expected to remain closed until Monday at 3 p.m. Necessary repairs to the overhead line are already possible, but the heavy wagons must first be cleared aside, which will take some time. This incident also leads to massive restrictions in long-distance transport, especially for the ICE trains between Frankfurt and Brussels, which fail between Cologne and Aachen.
