Multi pad closes branches: clearance sales in NRW announced!
Multipolster, a well-known furniture retailer in Germany, plans to close two other branches in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The locations in Mülheim an der Ruhr and Bielefeld-Mitte are affected, which are to be finally closed on April 5, 2025. As early as December 2024, the company announced the closure of its branch in the Dortmund Indupark, which indicates ongoing economic difficulties in the furniture industry. The branch in Bielefeld is closed at Eckendorfer Straße 91-93; However, the one in Bielefeld-Brackwede remains. The Mülheim branch at Schultenhofstrasse 46 has existed since 2017, which has been underlining in Bielefeld since 2010, which also underlines the long -term development of these locations.
Both closures take place as part of an announced clearance purchase, in which customers can expect discounts of up to 80 percent. Multipolsters justify the closures with the insufficient economic success at the locations concerned. A spokeswoman for the company made it clear that there are currently no further closures in North Rhine-Westphalia. After the closures, a total of nine multipolster branches remain in the region, including locations in Bonn, Essen, Hilden, Cologne-Marsdorf, Krefeld, Paderborn, Siegburg and Schwelm.
difficult framework conditions for the furniture industry
The decision to close these branches reflects the continued difficult situation in the furniture industry. According to a report by NW.de, the sales of the German furniture manufacturers in 2024 fell by 7.4 percent to just EUR 16.4 billion. Many furniture retailers fight for their existence, so that some companies even had to go into short work. Experts like Sebastian Wilde warn that the increased cost of living forces households to restructure their expenses, with losing expenses for furniture in urgency.
In order to accommodate the customer in this crisis, some furniture stores rely on special offers, but often with moderate success. The mood in the industry is tense, which is also reflected in the cancellation of the Imm Cologne, an important furniture fair. While in 2023 44 percent of companies their business situation and 33 percent considered poor, only 22 percent expect sales increase for 2024.
multipolster under new leadership
Multipolster was founded in 1990 near Chemnitz and now has around 50 branches in nine federal states. In April 2020, Hans Segmüller Polstermöbelfabrik GmbH & Co. KG acquired 75 percent of the shares in multipolster, since June 1, 2023 it has been a 100 percent subsidiary of Segmüller. Despite this takeover, the company is now struggling in a tense market environment in which large competitive companies such as Ikea have to record sales.
With the closure of the two NRW branches, the crisis in the furniture industry continues to intensify, in which bankruptcies have reached a ten-year high. Customers show increasingly stronger preference for investments in trips and other areas of life, while furniture purchases are classified as less urgent.
