Restrictions on rail traffic: important routes affected by February!
Since January 20, 2025, an important railway line in North Rhine-Westphalia (North Rhine-Westphalia) has only been accessible to a limited extent. The current restrictions are expected to be provided until February 21, 2025. The reason for the blocking is extensive construction work of Deutsche Bahn.
The work includes the renovation of the Düsseldorf-Wehrhahn S-Bahn station, in which track work and the construction of a new station building take place. This construction project is expected to take until 2027. In addition, the Rather Broich railway bridge is renewed.
affected train lines and diversions
The construction work has a direct impact on various train connections in the region. According to Ruhr24, the regional express trains re1 and re5 drive according to plan. However, the RE3 between Oberhausen Hbf and Düsseldorf Hbf and the S1 between Düsseldorf Hbf and Düsseldorf-Unterrath are canceled. The RE6 is diverted between Neuss Hbf and Duisburg Hbf, which means that the stop in Bilk, Düsseldorf Hbf and at Düsseldorf Airport are eliminated. The RE11 ends at the Düsseldorf airport terminal, while the RE19 is also diverted, with which stop at Düsseldorf Airport is also eliminated. The S6 also has restrictions: it only runs between Düsseldorf Hbf and Ratingen Ost without stopover and is completely out of this section in the evening. The S11 has a similar problem and fails between Düsseldorf Hbf and Düsseldorf airport.
Furthermore, Deutsche Bahn recommends travelers to use their online information systems in order to find alternative connections and to find out about the current changes in their travel course.
additional restrictions in Bochum and the surrounding area
In addition to the above restrictions, WDR that will not hold long-distance trains in Bochum by February 23, 2025. Only a few regional trains are affected. Affected ICE connections include Düsseldorf-Berlin, Hamburg-Passau and Stuttgart-Dresden. For some routes it is possible to get in or out in Solingen. The ICE/IC line Lindau-Dortmund ends in Cologne and all hold in the Ruhr area. The Dortmund-Wien route is also affected, while ICE Aachen-Berlin is only used from Dortmund, and part of the trains must be redirected on the ICE line Dortmund-Munich. Similar diversions apply to the IC line of Cologne-Gera/Leipzig, whereby some trains only drive to Dortmund.
The current situation is part of an extensive modernization plan for Deutsche Bahn to improve the rail infrastructure in the region. An investment of around 90 million euros will be made in various projects to ensure the stability and reliability of the rail network. This also includes targeted measures such as the track conversion and the renewal of important bridges, as with a construction project in East Westphalia, which runs until the end of November, such as Deutsche Bahn reported.
travelers are asked to regularly inform themselves about the timetables and choose alternative routes if necessary to avoid inconvenience during the construction work.
