Blocking of the tunnel Wambel: Attention road users!

In March 2025, drivers in Dortmund face major challenges, since the Wambel tunnel is partially and completely blocked due to necessary maintenance work. These measures are scheduled for the nights from March 5th to March 6th and from 6th to March 7th. The reason for the closures is comprehensive maintenance work on the tunnel technology, which are carried out every six years to ensure security. According to Ruhr24 , an important inspection of the tunnel systems is therefore announced.

The first measure includes a partial block in the night from March 5th to March 6th, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. During this time, only one lane is available in both directions. The departure from the B1 in the direction of Bochum to the B236 towards Lünen will not be possible due to this work. However, diversions are signposted to support the flow of traffic and avoid traffic jams.

full closure in the tunnel Wambel

The second measure takes place in the night from March 7th to March 7th, where a complete full closure of the tunnel is due in both directions from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers are urgently asked to avoid the route far space and to find out about possible alternatives in advance. According to Radio 91.2 , considerable traffic disruptions can be expected during these nightly closures.

In order to minimize the effects of the blocking, Street.NRW informs that in addition to the maintenance work, regular inspections of the operating and security technology are carried out two to four times a year. The organization operates a total of 37 street tunnels with a total length of around 26.5 kilometers. These regular inspections are necessary to ensure the safety of the tunnels and to identify potential risks at an early stage.

Especially in view of the traffic density and the numerous users of the tunnel, it is advisable to take a detailed look at the traffic information and to plan enough time for the bypass. The specific maintenance work is to be understood as part of a comprehensive approach to traffic safety, which not only improves the infrastructure, but also contributes to the safety of all road users.
